He shouldn’t be able to ride this weekend, it’s too serious an offence to allow him to be in that environment being watched worldwide on their biggest meeting of the year.
I accept he’s made a terrible mistake and didn’t intend to something so stupid but it’s happened now and he’s extremely lucky that Rossa has walked away from that relatively unscathed.6 months to a year would be about right (he would have been suspended indefinitely if Ryan was seriously hurt) but the leniency of 2 months is quite poor. Cannot ride this weekend, he has to step down from his bookings himself if not given an immediate order.
September 30, 2022 at 18:08 #1616418Christophe Soumillon would be well advised to give up his rides this weekend voluntarily and in fact not ride again until the termination of his suspension.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 30, 2022 at 18:13 #1616419As per 99% of things to do with racing im pretty leniant on, the elliott case etc, but no ian, sorry, thats not dangerous “riding” nowhere in the playbook of “riding” is elbowing people off horses accepted, its never been a part of riding curriculum taught, its not a tool to be used in racing like closing the door (which can be done safely) there is no “safe” way to elbow someone travelling at 35mph balancing on a saddle… ,
If rossa ryan had broke his spine today, which if you rewatch the fall (caused purely and utterly outwith racing regulation and out of malice, nothing else) was entirely possible would you still be sharing this opinion?
I dont think so,
Of course it strayed outside of the boundaries into criminality… are you genuinely of the opinion he didnt mean that? LOL do you have any idea about what your watching? Most of your opinions are comical but this is another level even for your standards
Ive never once suggested a life ban for anything in horse racing as 99% of the time your right regarding unjust outcry, but your an absolute mile off, anyone and everyone involved in the sport would condemn that as dangerous with intent
September 30, 2022 at 18:22 #1616425We have stewards and jockeys are innocent until enquiry is made of what happened.
Let the stewards handle this and don’t hang the chap before he has had a fair hearing. Very naughty and dangerous granted but the likes of Millington really should know better. Surely his job is to report not judge. What next? he’ll be telling us how bookies have ravaged his publication stopping him from speaking out for punters.
Rossa’s comments
“Ryan told the Racing Post: “I just got a bump and lost my balance. It’s just one of those things that happens. I feel disappointed for Ralph and his team bringing him out here, but we’ll move on.“The horse is fine, I’m fine. That’s the main thing. I’m 100 per cent.”
September 30, 2022 at 18:28 #1616426Well said, Sam.
The British press have “previous” for only “growing a pair” and getting stuck in when it’s a non-British jockey involved.
It’s been a trait ever since they crucified Yutaka Take over his ride on White Muzzle in the Arc in the 90s.
Dangerous riding, deserves six months, and he couldn’t complain if he got a year.
But I’ve yet to read a researched posting informing us what the tariff range is the local stewards are empowered to hand out and whether or not they can refer an offence upwards if they feel it’s too serious for the maximum ban they can hand out.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 30, 2022 at 22:43 #1616457I think the horse under Soumillon has jinked just at the time he’s tried to nudge Ryan to keep his position which exacerbated the situation. That said, he absolutely should not be getting his elbows out at all and a two month ban is extremely lenient given it could literally have caused a death. He should give up his Arc ride voluntarily but if not, should be stood down and shunned by trainers and owners alike until his punishment is served.
September 30, 2022 at 23:24 #1616461Just a bad day for racing all round. Rossa being extemely diplomatic to put it mildly. Probably burnt by what has gone before. Cant imagine what soumi was thinking. Its a group three back end french race. Very lucky boy to get only two months. Absolutely no excuse. Great jockey but not a great man. A sad reflection on racing he wasnt banned for at least 6 months.
October 1, 2022 at 03:58 #1616470‘The internet is full of faceless keyboard warrior lynch mobs, who want to hand out life bans for various things – bit sad to see it on TRF, tbh, I thought we were collectively better than that.’
Please be respectful of the current management !
October 1, 2022 at 07:47 #1616477Very witty, gamble, but I feel it also betrays the lack of a sense of proportion that afflicts internet lynch mobs.
When reading them howling with indignation, calling for terminations of entire careers, I often find myself wondering how many members of them have ever been in positions to dispense such “justice” in the real world (thankfully, virtually none, I’d imagine).
You don’t automatically lose your primary source of income by getting kicked off an Internet forum – that’s the difference.
Only in the more rabid corners of the web are the usual suspects calling for a life ban, among the ranks of the rational, sane and measured the consensus seems to be that the ban is unduly lenient.
It was the same with Gordon Elliott – most thought he should get a year, he only got six months.
In this instance most seem to think six months would have been more appropriate, he couldn’t have complained at an entire year, and he’s got off very lightly with two.
Only the internet’s eternal children throw life ban tantrums in situations like this.
And howling children having tantrums are just attention seeking and are best ignored.
Scouring the media this morning, even the reliably hysterical Daily Mail (you’re always on dodgy ground if you find yourselves agreeing with them in any shape or form) stop short of calling for a life ban and instead say he should simply lose his retainer riding for the Aga Khan.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 1, 2022 at 08:35 #1616481In terms of the effect on the offender, with the ban starting in October, two months or six months makes very little difference. He’d still be back for the start of the next flat season.
But two months does seem very lenient, when compared to the draconian bans the French authorities have imposed on UK based jockeys for breaching their extremely low drug thresholds.
October 1, 2022 at 09:27 #1616489He’s lucky that Ryan walked away (jockeys do presumably know how to fall off a horse). Had a career ending injury occurred then the ‘eye for an eye’ of a lifetime ban may be more justified. Two months is very lenient, he could make no complaints if it was a year.
I’ll settle on saying an immediate ban, lifted the day after the 2023 Arc is my verdict.
October 1, 2022 at 09:32 #1616490It was a bit disappointing to see Martin Dwyer on Racing TV last night making light of the incident. Host Nick Lightweight did say it was a serious incident to which an unperturbed Dwyer said it was OK to laugh about it now we know Ryan is OK.
I know things can get too serious sometimes but this was as bad a riding offence as I have ever seen and not something to be joking about.
October 1, 2022 at 09:49 #1616491Agree CAS, the owners presumably will come for him shortly and then the outcome should change, im still hoping france gallop have another look before their hand is forced, its a bad look for them
It made a fair few news outlets, hoping it gathers more attention, i cant recall ever seeing something as bad as this in the sport, it eclipses anything in recent years by a distance, its one thing the mistreatment of the horses, its another thing putting a jockeys life in danger, which clearly, it was.
Credit to young RR for playing it down, hes handled that perfectly fine, but presumably thats due to how bryony was treated when she spoke out, fear for taking it “public”
Its such a shady sport at times…
October 1, 2022 at 09:57 #1616495I think Ryan was far too kind and generous to Soumillon. I wouldn’t have been.
I agree with the consensus that a life ban is over the top but the current penalty is lenient.
I suppose it is just as well it was in a race with few runners. Imagine if a jockey did that in a big field handicap.
October 1, 2022 at 10:39 #1616510Like I said, six months would be my verdict, no real issues with those who said a year and picking up on Alan’s point I always feel “out of season” shouldn’t count.
It should be six months to a year expressed in days and only days when there is actual turf racing taking place should count.
Soumillon has phoned Beckett and apologised and Beckett has been quoted as saying: “It’s hard to be outraged when you’ve been apologised to” and I suspect connections will take it no further.
But their costs for a wasted journey and back should have been recovered from Soumillon in the form of an additional fine in my view.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 1, 2022 at 11:02 #1616519Rossa could have ended up in a wheelchair for life. I’ve seen the incident now on the head on. It didn’t even improve his position. He did it because he could.
The penalties are miniscule and I’d agree he has no place on a racecourse at all until it is resolved what is going on with this guy.
I’m not sure what is going on in the jockey’s head it cannot be very clear but something has come loose. There is no way having heard what he has to say about the incident that he should take any further part in the meeting. He didn’t mean to make him fall but what else was going to happen? He was not jockeying for position or for an out.
Crazy behaviour and wanton and reckless. It is not about the ban it is about finding out what is going on with this guy and until that is clear he should not ride.
It might be drugs, He just might simply be a psychopath.
Standing him down right now is a duty of care that protects him and others and the horses.October 1, 2022 at 11:29 #1616526I’d have no issues with the ban having immediate effect – as it stands he’s down to ride the favourite Duke Of Sessa in the 12.23 in less than an hour!
