The proposed changes to the State Pension annual increases are fine, in isolation, but Burnham did NOT address the NOW.
As a replacement for the toolmaker’s son he has also avoided any immediate changes to the wider welfare payments system.
His speech also conveniently avoided any reference to how his government will deal with Defence; very much a topical subject and requirement to be addressed NOW.

In fact, the Here&Now, was completely absent from his speech.
With UK government debt turbo-charging the bond markets (UK) on top of the global challenges, mortgage rates approaching highest in many years, petrol/diesel at record highs, soon to feed thru to everyday purchases, his Here&Now omissions are a fundamental error, in my view.

“… but Burnham did NOT address the NOW.”

What would you have done to solve the issue NOW, given your economic prowess?

Caused by the war that most of the UK right would have happily followed the USA into. Yet net zero is ‘madness’ and is falsely equated with higher costs.

History will, eventually if we haven’t cooked ourselves to oblivion, look back with utter contempt for those who pushed continued reliance on fossil fuels. Baffles me that the self proclaimed economic geniuses on the right can’t see beyond the end of their noses and see that the long term future is renewable energy. How’s the economy going to be when food crops start failing on a large scale as a result of the climate change that’s literally happening in front of our eyes?

Climate change doesn’t exist, Richard. Just ask @Salateen

How was it in any way “dubious”?

Annoying perhaps a better choice of word: resignation of the incumbent MP permitting Burnham to jump the mayoralty ship despite promising to see out his term in Manchester.

Anyway, I’ve no wish to debate that any further: let that sleeping dog lie and move on, as I implied

Much as I largely agree with your posts Gladiateur, I’m not keen on the confrontation that many contain. Why you have it in for Cork All Star – an erudite and interesting correspondent – I really can’t fathom.

Disagreement is the life-blood of debate, echo chambers are just boring

Why does everyone cry with emotion and cheer when Burnham refers to his father when they laughed at Keir when he talked about his father and family ( with great sincerity imo). And I’ve only just realised by listening to the news that all this talk about social care still means that I will probably have to sell my house to pay for residential care home costs.

“I will probably have to sell my house to pay for residential care home costs.”

Whilst you have my sympathies, the privatisation of care is yet another stone to hang around the Tories’ necks.

The amount of damage they did to the country should never be forgotten .. and “New Labour” did bugger all to correct the wrongs of Thatcherism.

It comes back to the point I’ve made many times , people ( especially children ) need to be the educated that they need to plan to take care of themselves , you shouldn’t be allowed to opt out of work pensions and financing education needs to taught in school , the state simply can’t deal with a ageing population and slowing birth rate

And the worst thing is that at least two of his successors were even worse: Bozo and Truss.

As a lifelong Labour voter I should have been elated listening to today’s speech by Burnham. As it is I didn’t even bother to listen to it and the bits I did hear on the news irritated me. I can’t get over the way he became PM. Only a year ago he was still saying that he was committed to being mayor of Manchester. I spoke to someone on Sunday who goes to their village Labour club even though she isn’t a Labour voter and she said that even two years ago they were talking about Burnham becoming leader and asking people of their opinion of him. It reminds me of when I was first a member of the party but left because I just wasn’t left wing enough for all of them ( Chris Williamson was a member of my local group back then). The only reason I haven’t resigned my membership this time is that my MP is really nice and she remained loyal to Starmer.

If you think Starmer is more “Labour” than Burnham, moehat, you’re sadly mistaken.

So Burnham want’s to take us back to the past … I lived through the damage Labour and the unions did in the 70’s and they as good as bankrupted the country. With Government income rising but spending rising even faster he may do just that.
    good luck to all

Kid it’s 2026 , it’s a completely different world , we had 12 years of Tory failure , failure that did damage that will take years to fix , slowly the country will get there , the shoots are there , what’s important now is to defend the country against those who are out to fill their pockets , I don’t need to say who that is …
