I notice this 3 yr old filly won the Japanese Oaks on firm turf, 1m 4f yesterday.
    1st prize £973,713 with the 5th getting £74,426, 17 ran.

Perhaps someone could tell me if :-
a] the prize money is because of a Tote monopoly
b] outsiders, i.e. foreigners, appear to be excluded, but I’m not sure about that, nevertheless a competitive field. How many in our Oaks coming up…

the japanese oaks was 126.9 million to the winner, which at today’s mid-rate of 151 to GBP is GBP 840k.

sterling has tanked – a year ago the rate was 204 to GBP, so that would have been GBP 622k.

the japanese 2000 guineas a few weeks ago paid 132m yen to the winner.

yes, the prize levels are due to pari-mutuel monopoly (as are the low entrance costs), and yes the japanese oaks is one of the races that is not a designated international race:

thank you for confirming and for providing the link. I’ve just watched the race, she just got up – I thought the other had won it….good finish and a nice looking track too. :)
