Fantastic Aintree jockey, whose record in his nine Grand Nationals (1967-76, except 1972) was 31FFR1123, i.e. he was in the first three on all six occasions when he finished the race, including two victories on Red Rum, and one on Red Alligator. In my opinion he would have beaten Rag Trade in 1976 had he retained the ride on Red Rum; he still finished third on Eyecatcher. It was my first visit to watch the National live, and I felt very disappointed for Bryan. Apparently he was a very pleasant man, too.

We met him a few years ago and, yes, he was lovely. He did say the ground was against Rummy one of the times when he didn’t win.
