Just had a look at Nicholls column and he expects Celestial to "run a very big race" with the rain due in. To be honest I can’t see anything in the field that is crying out for this race to be a slog in the mud more than him, and on the conditions I have him as the one to beat, and wouldnt really want to be on any ofthe first three in the betting or river liane if the rain does come, but cases could be made for the rest as safety bets.
December 13, 2008 at 04:21 #196575I’m with AP here- these 4 y o s will need to be pretty special to get home tomorrow. Under current conditions I think Katchit is a knocking each-way bet at 9/2 1/4 first 3- My only worry is that the race will cut up if we do get more rain. I’d love a bit of 33/1 Khyber Kim as well, but it’s only with the fiddlers…
December 13, 2008 at 04:45 #196579Did Nicholls say if Celestial Halo is fully over what ailed him in the summer. An allergic reaction, quotes from his stable tour (Oct 27) in Racing Post, "We’ve had a nightmare…..doesn’t look as good as the rest" Though he did say he’d be ready for the Boylesports. If fully fit, would indeed be value at morning prices.
All my ante-post bets for the Champion run here, backed them to differing degrees at different stages. Crack Away Jack, Celestial Halo, Chomba Womba and Binocular.

Value Is EverythingDecember 13, 2008 at 04:54 #196582He said something along the lines of- like all of mine he’s looking very well at home, and with the ground expected to soften we think he could run a very big race. Saying that he was well backed before his hurdling debut which he won easily and he was well backed in the run up for the triumph, yet he has had no money here, which I for one dont really like but still have to play him, because he ticks every other box for me.
Huge amount of confident behind Katchit everywhere I look, and solwit is probably the e/w gamble of the race but have to stick to my guns here, CH has had everything come up in his favour (apart from perhaps an extra couple of furlongs added on) and I think he has what it takes.
December 13, 2008 at 11:00 #196608A race that will offer more clues to the Champion Hurdle puzzle.
This is a fantastic renewal, with reigning champion Katchit and top second season prospects Binocular, Celestial Halo and Crack Away Jack all taking their chance. Throw the enigmatic Harchibald and tough, talented mare Chomba Womba into the mix and we have a genuine CH trial, albeit without the top Irish contenders.
Katchit’s impressive course record of five from six at this track and never finishing outside the placings in fifteen starts over timber make him the one they all have to beat.
He simply loves it here and the ground will pose no problems. I fully expect him to reverse Wincanton form with Chomba Womba, but she will benefit greatly from the conditions, which will bring her stamina into play and she’s handled testing ground before. She comes into the race in great form and will be hard to keep out of the frame.
The uber-talented Binocular is arguably the best horse in the race. However, he’ll have it all to do against hardened, older horses like Katchit and Chomba Womba under testing conditions, which connections have voiced concerns over.
He’s a good jumper, but his speed is perhaps his biggest strength. It’s quite interesting that connections feel he’s best when produced late, utilising that turn of foot to optimum effect.
In a race where Katchit could be hard to pass, especially so late on, will the race work out for Binocular? If produced too late, he could find it a tough ask trying to get by the little warrior, who will already have his down, attacking his favourite hill.
Crack Away Jack and Celestial Halo are both interesting contenders, but they have it all to do to reverse juvenile form with Binocular. A lot can happen over a Summer, but the Nicky Henderson-trained horse easily disposed of them last season and he himself has also improved.
Harchibald will decide if he wants to get involved and has the abilty to do so. Solwhit is open to improvement and will need to show some of it.
I’m taking Katchit to continue his impressive record at Cheltenham. Though conditions may not be ideal, Binocular should have enough quality to shake up the champion and secure second, ahead of tough mare Chomba Womba.
December 13, 2008 at 11:32 #196611Won’t beat Binny
December 13, 2008 at 12:51 #196617Not gonna be Binny’s day today Fist trust me
I’ll be amazed if Harchibald runs.
December 13, 2008 at 13:43 #196628Agree Ian.
The ground will be far too soft for him to run a decent race.
December 13, 2008 at 15:30 #196664Not anyones day It’s off….toldya they either get withdrawn if I bet them or the racing is put off….Fist Of Jinx
Damn shame was the best race of the season by far
December 14, 2008 at 00:45 #196778not all lost yet – we certainly hope it can be rescheduled for next weekend.
i think there are a number of horses for whom the christmas hurdle isn’t ideal – if they can’t reschedule it could put preparations for March and the rest of the season into chaos
fingers crossed (although I’d expect ascot to suit Binny more than us)
December 14, 2008 at 01:22 #196790Am i the only one who finds Binocular being called "Binny" a bit stomach churning?

You know, even as I was typing it I was thinking the same thing – it’s clearly a little contagious!
December 14, 2008 at 02:38 #196800I think my Tricast would have been Katchy to beat Cracky to beat Chomby. Celesty the dark horse.

December 14, 2008 at 16:49 #196872Binnie, hmmm, does seem a bit odd.
But to be fair, wonder how Dessie and Rummy went down before their rise to the top.

Value Is EverythingDecember 14, 2008 at 18:26 #196882Should be called Pru instead of Peruvian Anyone who has stepped inside a yard or knows any of the lads who work there knows that all horse have shortened names or nicknames……Binny-Binocular——-Binny Binny Binny Binny Yup sounded about right to me when I firsts started using it. Sorry aout hat I get azy sometimes and cant spell Binocular……That is it Beckie calls Noland?……..Nobby if Iam not mistaken
Wouldn’t be anything to do with the fact that I was the first person to tout Binny as a champion hurdle horse would it Pru? Im guessing but I have a sneaky suspicion that bugs the hell out of you. Love the way you can’t help but have a go at every chance you get…..geez is life that boring
Maybe this will help pass the time……There was a horse trained by David Geraghty who’s name I can’t remember but I know he finished 3rd to Mr Devious at Worcester in 1995 and the claim he never had a nickname……look him up and tell me what you think
