I was wondering if anybody knows where Bosra Sham is these days and also if she has produced any decent offspring since her retirement to the paddocks as I havn’t heard of any?

Just to fill in a gap or two, Shami remains in training with Ruth Carr and is rated 40 while Rosberg and Bosra’s Valentine have won races in Dubai, although not at the top level. Basically, she’s been hugely disappointing.

Thank you for your help Rory. It does sound like she has been a big disapointment.

Disappointing maybe, but I can’t help feeling shes’s been sent to the wrong kind of stallion on most occasions.

Most of the stallions she’s visited had been 10 – 12F performers, very much like herself. She may have excelled at a mile, but I remember Kieron Fallon saying she’d have no problem staying 12F because she settles so well.

It’s quite interesting her most recent offspring, Tingling, owned by Michael Tabor, made a pleasing debut at the beginning of June over a mile. She is by Storm Cat, who finished second in a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Bosra Sham is at the right age to produce a good horse. Most mares produce their best offspring well into their ‘teens’.

Whatever happened to Branded by the way? He was by Singspiel and never made it to the racecourse.

It’s upset me greatly that she was sent to Rainbow Quest, Singspiel and SW – none of whom were suitable for her, IMO. I’d like her to visit Giant’s Causeway, she should have gone to Danehill – or Shamardal or Cape Cross.

Agreed, especially Cape Cross. Shamardal would also be very interesting.

I think Pivotal would be an excellent choice. His progeny can do nothing wrong at the moment and she’s at the right age to produce a ‘good ‘un’.

I think she needs a stallion with a bit of speed.

Danehill would have been a good choice (as he would for most mares), but I’m not so sure about Shamardal – no runners yet, so we must assume he’ll be one of the 90% of stallions who are so-so or worse, until proven otherwise.

Giant’s Causeway has been greatly overrated, imo, when you consider the fantastic books he’s been gettting, at least until this year. His AEI of 2.51 looks pretty handy until you look as his CI of 3.56 – he’s significantly downgrading his mares.

I don’t disagree – and I wouldn’t recommend him for every mare, but I think they would be a good match.

The problem when a sire becomes so fashionable so quickly is that they become the stallion-of-choice for so many unsuitable partners – a mare is sent to them purely for the name and future sale price without any consideration of compatibility.

A great stallion can usually keep producing the goods, where as a so-so stallion can suffer.

I’d be happy to take a punt of Shamardal. With what Bosra’s achieved as a broodmare so far with established stallions, I don’t think it would be a loss-making exercise to try an unknown.

Oddly enough, I can’t find her returns for 2007, or for this year. I presume she was rested last year, but can’t find a covering or foal for her. As it appears she will be going through the ring at Tatts later in the year, I suppose we will find out then who her 2008 and 2009 produce are by.

why is she being sold? is it because she hasn’t produced a world beater, or is it usual for brood mares to move around to several owners? she was such a favourite of mine, I’d hate to think of her sliding down some sort of scale…..is her value now a lot less than, say 5 years ago?

Sal – what makes you think she’s going to be sold?

Bosra sham is more than likely still at Ashford Kentucky. She foundered about 2years ago I believe post foaling. her 2yo Tingling is in david Wachman’s yard if memory serves me correctly. other offspring havent really lived up to expectations I think.

not according to a recent N. American study published in the Bloodhorse ("Losing the Iron Horse" I believe it was called). Most top racehorses were produced as 1st or 2nd foals and from 4th foal onwards the chances of a foal finding glory decreased greatly.
