“Instead, he’ll claim he has a mandate from 14m voters, and will threaten to force an election – but not before deselecting everyone who voted against him”
I was denounced as a lefty fantasist for suggesting this here less than 24 hours ago.
Much though I don’t like him, I’d be hugely entertained by him calling a snap election before his own party can kick him out.
And I absolutely wouldn’t rule out him attempting to do this.

July 6, 2022 at 16:29 #1605578Donald Trump refused to accept an election result and it was touch and go whether he would ever voluntarily vacate the White House.
It should come as no surprise to anyone if Boris Johnson shows a similar attitude.
It’s like a football club that gets relegated but turns up for the opening away fixture of one of the promoted Clubs the following season.
I might be wrong and he might go gracefully, but nothing I have ever seen from him suggests to me that is at all likely.

July 6, 2022 at 17:00 #1605584I’m reading that he knows the game is up, but he wants the optics of being dragged from office so he won’t resign.

July 6, 2022 at 17:17 #1605591For whatever reason he apparently wants to be seen to be dragged from office and the BBC were actually discussing the logistics of whether or not Johnson could call a “wild cat” election, thus taking it out of his Party’s hands and “letting the people decide,” effectively making it a referendum on him as PM.

July 6, 2022 at 17:29 #1605595He won’t call an election.
Not that the Queen would allow him to.Value Is EverythingJuly 6, 2022 at 17:33 #1605596I suspect there might be insurmountable constitutional and sheer logistic issues which prevent him calling an election, but the very fact it’s even being discussed shows just how unpredictable everyone knows he is.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 6, 2022 at 17:38 #1605597Boris is just using the idea of a snap election as a futile attempt on persuading Conservative MPs not to call on him to go.

July 8, 2022 at 19:07 #1606069Boris Johnson surely wins this first exit match against Dettori but, like Donald Trump in the USA, I think he fancies himself as “The Comeback Kid,” maybe if the Tories don’t win in 2024.
He has no option but to relinquish power this year, but why stay on rather than walk away if he’s not thinking further ahead?
His problem may be that unless the Tories win in 2024, electoral reform beckons and not even he at his most populist could secure 50.1% of the popular vote.
