If you’re leaving these shores there’s no better book tham Bill Bryson’s "Notes from a Small Island" It’ll have you peeing yourself with laughter.

My hubby and I once had to forego a planned evening of debauchery because I just happened to dip into the book and laughed till I cried until he fell asleep……..

Brilliant book that one! I got the BB one all about the world (can’t remember the title) for Christmas but am having a job getting into it.

Some great suggestions there peoples keep em coming now! :D

Some of Bill’s books are hard going, but the funny ones are unbeatable. Have you read "Notes from a Big Country"? about America. That’s just as hilarious as the British one.

Lasy year I went to "An evening with Bill Bryson" when he was launching a new book and everyone was queuing to get him to sign their brand new copy, but I asked him to sign my very motheaten old copy of "Notes…".

 Did he sign it anyway?

I do really like his funny ones, I might get the American one as I haven’t read that. :D
The serious one is really heavy going for this person of tiny brain :?

Yes he did sign it, very graciously. :)

I’ve found the American one every bit as funny as the British one, and it’s easy to dip into because it consists of articles from a weekly newspaper column he used to write, so each chapter is a three or four page chunk. Nice to read on the loo :-)

    Some extracts…..

" an advertisement in Britain for a cold relief capsule…would promise no more than it might make you feel a bit better….A commercial for the same product in America would guarantee total, instantaneous relief. An American would take the medicine and would actually feel better than he had for years and finish the day having the time of his life at a bowling alley."

"Here’s a fact for you. According to the latest "Abstract of the United States", every year more than 400,00 Americans suffer injuries involving beds, mattresses or pillows…That is more people than live in greater Coventry. That is almost 2,000 bed, mattress or pillow injuries a day. In the time it takes you to read this article, four Americans will somehow manage to be wounded by their bedding."

I like books like that. I like those Jeremy Clarkson ones – they are all his column – well the ones I’ve seen, I think he can be quite funny

Those extracts are funny, I might get his American one for sure :D

    Another one….

"Most people in most places don’t know much about the rest of the world. I mean to say, could you name the leaders of Denmark or The Netherlands or even Ireland? Of course you couldn’t – and you are immensely intelligent and attentive. I can see that from here. No reason why you should. There is a lot of world out there to follow, and you have your hands full just keeping up with Eastenders. I understand.

Well so far I have: 8)

The Eiger Obsession – John Harlin III
Climb – Stories of survival from Rock, Snow and Ice
Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains – Jon Krakauer
Eiger The Vertical Arena – Daniel Anker
Matterhorn Vision: How a Summit Ambition Was Achieved – Brian Bonner

I found a whole shelf of these books at Page One

    Severed – Simon Kernick

I am searching for The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer – tells the story of the harrowing first ascent of the Eiger’s North Wall and also details the story of Toni Kurz’s attempt – heartbreaking story.
I read this years ago when I was about 12 but lost my old tattered old copy a while back when someone borrowed it and didn’t return it and then left the country

    Bill Bryson’s:
    Notes From A Big Country
    Down Under
    Notes From A Small Island

Right I think that’s the hand luggage taken care of….

I’ve just finished reading Sir Jackie Stewarts autobiography, and it was first class and very moving. He is a fascinating character, and I think the book would also appeal to those who don’t give two hoots about motor-racing. Highly recommended.

I’ve also just finished Radical Evolution, by Joel Garreau. It’s all about how, in the space of the next 25 years, all our lives will be transformed by advances in GRIN technologies (Genetic, Robotic, Information, Nanotechnology) and how anyone who can make it through to around 2030 will probably be capable of living forever………….except for viewers in Scotland.

    Tend to read a lot more non fiction but one novel to recommend;

Lay of the Land – Richard Ford. The great american novelist at his very very best

Short story collection. Mothers and Sons but classy irish writer Colm Toibin is well worth a look.

As for my usual subjects. Politics and sport

Thatchers son by Simon Jenkins is excellent summary of past two decades and pretty hard hitting too. Started Blair Unbound by anthont Seldon and that is fascinating

Sport. Duncan Fletchers maligned bio is an excellent and fascianting read.

and racing…. of course..the one ive been banging on about all season…Not by a Long shot

As for Bill Brysons books….first was a great read but it was downhill after that
