Oh this is sad, I’ve just found out that Bobby Beasley died last week aged 72. Older members may remember him from the 60’s and 70’s, on such as Nicholaus Silver [National] Richard of Bordeaux [Mackeson], Another Flash [Champion Hurdle] and Captain Christy [Gold Cup], some of his most famous successes.

He lived in Kent for the final years of his life.

Yes, I remember him, I would also recommend that you try to get hold of, and read, his autobiography. A bit of an eye-opener on growing up in Ireland.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Bobby Beasley but know he was rated very highly and thought well of, by those who did know him……….I just watched Captain Christie win the God Cup from The Dickler last night, thanks to Arazi and then come on here and read the guy is dead………Very sad news and would never had believed he was 72 years old
    Respect and RIP

When I was very, very young  I told my father to put sixpence to win on Nicholaus Silver in the 1961 Grand National. It won of course with Bobby aboard. I read in later years that half the field were doped, which was just as well, even the Russian horses Reljef and Grifel [not sure why they bothered to dope them  ].

I never knew for sure if my father paid me out, he just put some coins in my money box. I expect he cut his losses and never put anything on it at all. He later became a bookie – no surprise there then :D

My first memory of H. Beasley and a happy one :)
