Hey guys .
Iv Been following black apalachi for a while now and i think he is a fantastic horse. He ran fantastic in the grand national on saturday only hit the 3rd last hard and denis o regan had to take a bit out of him to recover and other than that its my opinion that he would have won the national. if you look at the beecher chase that he won he sprinted home over the last fence and he is just a fantastic stayer . He ran his race fantastic and i think the win of mccoy has overshadowed his fantastic performance and i dont think its right. I believe over all he ran a far better race that Dont push it and it was the weight that told on him in the end. I know he came second but in my opinion his overall race performance was far better than dont push it as mccoy hit a few fences hard and only for black apalachis blunder at the 28th he wouldnt have caught him. does anyone agree??April 12, 2010 at 16:06 #289886The best horse won. It really is as simple as that.
April 12, 2010 at 16:09 #289888well in any sport it doesnt always have to be the best performance that ends up the victor in the end. it turned out to be more of a black apalachi loss than a dont push it win i believe. . . . i mean he had to make a blunder to give mccoy a sniff and the great jockey he is , he took the chance but that doesnt mean he deserved to win the race . . .
April 12, 2010 at 16:17 #289889dave, I feel your pain, but I’m sure there’ll be loads of us in the same boat. I had Maljimar as my main fancy, and he was running a blinder till he fell. I’m also of the opinion though, that it is irrelevant, as hand on heart, i don’t think he would have beaten Don’t Push It. I could give you a few hard luck stories on my slelctions over the years, 3 brought downs, falling when cantering etc….but, jumping is the name of the game, and as you have followed Black Apaplachi, you will know that it had already fallen in it’s 2 previous starts in the National, so it was a marked improvement in jumping to get round.
Despite his win in The Becher, he’s just not an Aintree horse, and I wouldn’t back him to jump round if he ran in it again.
April 12, 2010 at 16:24 #289893i suppose your right. do you think he will be able for it next year as a 12 year old?
April 12, 2010 at 16:27 #289895I think they’ll give it a go, and despite my previous post, I really like him, he’s a smashing big horse.
I just have my concerns over him around there.
April 12, 2010 at 16:31 #289896ha i had 20 e/w on piraya to. i always back him for some reason and i couldnt believe that he finished that race seen as he didnt even come close in even a 3 miler before. i think its because he was at the back and by the time he got to the fence it was half the size because the others knocked half it off ha

I doubt if BA’s mistake had any bearing on the final result. AP was ehre he wated to be when he wanted to be and had and earlier move, for instance, been required I’m pretty certain Don’t Push It would have been up for it.
Apart from the fact AP gave the horse an ultra good ride his fans, like myself had the Denman saga in the back of their minds.
All that poppycock about not presenting his horses at fences correctly was well and truly put to sleep.
There’s beeen times in the past when Don’t Push It has become somewhat unbalanced even when he has won but that wasn’t the case here…When the jumped 3 out what was going through my mind was Jonjo has him the fittest I’ve ever seen him and "you’ve got them Tony".
He did idle a bit on the run in but that’s just him and there was plenty left in the tank. Black Apalachi ran all the way to the line and put a helluval lot of distance between him and the 3rd and 4th so I doubt if that mistake too too much out of him.
I wonder what the weight will be if they both turn up next year and Denman runs?
April 12, 2010 at 17:15 #289905Phil Smith was asked last week by Matt Chapman on Get On on ATR about the weights if Denman was entered for the 2011 running and he said it would definately be a challenge in view of the fact that the top weight doesn’t carry above 11st 12lbs and the bottom nothing less than 10st since they changed the framing of the weights after 1999 so no horse would be out of the handicap on the day of the race.
April 12, 2010 at 17:52 #289915I do see where you’re coming from about Black Apalachi. I wanted him to get round on Saturday to see what might have been for the past two years had he stood up. What ‘might have been’ could have been one of the best Aintree horses for years, because not many horses have jumped those fences the way that he did. If anything, he came down in previous years because he jumped too big and too bold. After the sad losses of the previous day both horses made everyone realise just how wonderful it is to see horses jumping like that. Even if he doesn’t take part in the race next year
I can’t see him being forgotten in a hurry. One of the great jumping performances in recent years imo.
April 12, 2010 at 17:59 #289918i think black apalachi, showed a brillaint performance on saturday, he did his owners proud

April 12, 2010 at 18:26 #289928Black Apalachi was a superstar on Saturday – his bold jumping will live long in the memory. As he was up there for so long it gave plenty of opportunity to see his talents whereas Don’t Push It was much more difficult to notice. I also enjoyed Conna Castle’s spectacular enthusiastic jumping – which obviously took alot out of him. The year Crisp put up such a bold display solo up front I longed for him to hold on but Rummy came and galloped past – so Rummy won the race but I still remember Crisp just as much as Rummy. Don’t Push It got to the winning post first and as his jockey was AP and his longing for this race so well documented he will obviously get the majority of the attention. Winners are always remembered by alot of people and others who almost won might be remembered by a lesser number but remembered they will be. Well done Black Apalachi!
April 12, 2010 at 19:02 #289936Black Apalachi’s jumping was incredible bar the one mistake. To carry that weight and jump so fluently and cleanly over that trip was a great training performance by Dessie Hughes, and great ride by DOR.
If AP was on Black Apalachi on the run in however, and Denis o’ Regan was on Don’t Push It, I truly believe that Black Apalachi would have got up. AP was just in one his moods where he was not to be denied.
April 12, 2010 at 19:06 #289937I decided to start the thread because iv always been such a fan of this horse. I know he has fell the last two years but hes jus an amazing horse to look ag and the best jumper iv ever seen. And remember to ……. Because he is jumping as the front runner , he jumps the full height where as the other dont because the fence gets smaller the more jump over it …. And black apalachi cleared every of the without even grazing the top. Pure class in my opinion ….. If he never becomes grand national champion he has to be one of the best if not these best four mile stayer never to win the national.
April 12, 2010 at 21:06 #289958I don’t think AP was riding like AP; he said he just went out there to enjoy it and I because of that the horse enjoyed himself as well. Had every other horse sprouted wings on Saturday they wouldn’t’ve beaten McCoy and Don’t Push It. They were just cruising from way back.
April 12, 2010 at 21:59 #289974Conna Castle was the MVP of the Grand National! Didn’t expect that from the horse. What a performance of jumping! And the pace he set molded the race into what it was. Black Apalachi and Hello Bud deserve mention too.
Don’t Push It deserves more of a mention to be honest – Its like the final results reads 1. McCoy 2. Black Apalachi etc.
April 12, 2010 at 22:04 #289975It’s late – and I can’t think – what’s a MVP????!!
