I’ve just been in my local betting shop where I saw 2 blokes nearly come to blows as they argued over which Channel today’s Ascot card is on.

When I came hope I picked up my paper to see how the confusion came about – the first 3 races are on BBC and the next few are on Channel 4. I know it’s a boring topic, but I’ve never known a race card to be split between two rival terrestrial tv channels.

It appears then, that Ascot don’t care who have the rights to their racing, whereas some racecourses you can’t even see in a betting shop, never mind on TV.

On a different note, rather than start another thread, Chepstow have a good looking jumps card today. There was a thread recently asking people when they thought the jumps season starts proper. For me, it’s always been the Saturday that the Beeb show some jump races for the first time in the season, and I think today is that day – roll on Cheltenham

There’s only one race on C4 Mikky 3.00. It’s happened before a few times at the likes of Haydock and Ascot. I’ve not got a problem with it, the more the merrier

I totally agree Yeats, I’m all for it also. My thread was meant as a compliment to Ascot and more of a dig at the courses who squabble over their coverage being shown – though I’m first to admit that I know little about all the tv contract discussions that appear to be ongoing.

Glad to see that the quality of debate in betting shops is as high as ever

Agree with that "more the merrier comment" !! let me just say that i have ATR which comes free with the sports package on Sky which shows plenty of tracks (probably abit more jumps that flat , which im not complaining about) plus nearly all the Irish and the US racing not to mention the Aussie racing recently started the French and more !! Plus some rather amusing presenters – Matt Chapman probably the funniest.

whereas RacingUK is in the region of 30 quid a month so if you think im gonna shell out on that too you must be joking , however having said that the last time i read something in the RP about it more tracks were gonna be heading to RacingUK around April time.

As for the bookies – its a bloody joke aint it ……..you can watch cartoon Horse/Dog races but not the real thing , just dont seem right to me!!

Theres an independant round my way that shows everyrace and Totesport does too(imagine its the same everywhere)

p.s….i dont work for the above mentioned establishment!!

I agree with all of that Matthew.

For your info, you can now get RUK much cheaper than you are quoting. You can get it as part of the Setanta Sports package for just £9.99 a month (don’t quote me on that as it might be £14.99) – and I think the first 3 months are only charged at £5 per month, or at least that was a deal they were doing recently.

So if you like your Scottish football, US Golf and some extra Premiership matches, then you can do worse than sign up to Setanta and get Racing UK free with it. I think someone said on here that you can get all the above free if you are a NTL Digital viewer, though from your post I think you are a Sky customer.

    Andrew,

Yes, the quality of discussion in my local bookies is high as ever – though you will be surprised to know that the 2 blokes in question were the manager and his assistant

    Only joking,

    Mike

Fancy arguing over that…lol…we should think ourselves lucky.
RUK is £9.99 a month now like you say and I think that’s reasonable, but don’t try it on Freeview you won’t get it – only 1 Setanta channel and it’s mostly football.

My old mate Le Volfoni runs today at Chepstow. I love this one paced plodder, well that’s unkind I know but it’s how I think of him unfortunately, yet he’s only 6 and is probably better than this description, but it’s how he runs these days. Likes it soft or heavy so not today and with 7lbs Mr Scholfield on board, obviously not one to consider, but yeah, today’s the day Mikky.

I’m hoping Ibn Khaldun will romp home at Ascot and then go onto the Racing Post Trophy, and that Rio de la Plata, New Approach and Raven’s Pass will burn each other out in the Dewhurst and not train on, so that the former will be Godolphin’s choice for the 2000 Guineas, as I backed him before he ran at 130 and 140’s, and I want a run for my money :)

Yes, way to go UM, 130’s and 140’s is looking good, and regardless of where he is aimed at after today, if he dots up this afternoon you will be in a very strong position.

I know everyone says to lay the bet off once the odds are in your favour, but there is still nothing better than picking a big priced winner ante post, so I will be keeping my fingers crossed for your horse also, as I have had no interest in the said market.

    Good luck,

    Mike

i always thought the jumps season started at about the same time as the all weather season and that this was to give the purists some side entertainment between the all weather races as its cold outside this time of year

Racing UK free with Virgin Media if you have XL TV package.
Why pay £10 to Sky when you get it free with Virgin.

Well said Cheltboy free Racing Uk, Free ATR, free premiership matches on Setanta1, just what do Sky offer that Virgin dont besides the boring Sky One.

The only Sky channel i miss since the Virgin/Sky argument is Sky News.

Back to the Ascot thing C4 get anything the Beeb dont want if the BBC hadn’t been showing golf on one channel and Football on the other I suspect they would have kept the 3.00

Incidentally why are the BBC so desperate to keep Chepstow but let Goodwood and others go.
