I’m tired of this back and forth, sire………..please PM me to discuss a wager around this proposition.
Lets just confirm the wager first Grass! I am wagering you that Mikael runs in the RSA, You wager me he runs in the Arkle then? i will PM you tomorrow if you fancy the above!
August 8, 2009 at 03:03 #243013Let’s confirm the terms of the wager, and thence the stake, via PM.
Once it is all settled, and a honourable stake-holder has been agreed, we can commit to publishing it here.
Please PM with your intended T&C’s and proposed stake. If I don’t hear anything before the weekend is out, I will send you my proposal.
Cheers
GrassAugust 9, 2009 at 23:30 #243204The Gauntlet has been laid between myself and the Grasshopper,as to what target
Mikael d"Hageunet
will be aimed for at the 2010 Cheltenham festival! I the "King of the Ante-Post Kingdom" has wagered that Mikael will run in the RSA, my confidence is such, that Grasshopper
has managed to get any other race, including hurdles as his wager! I am aware that Mikael is 2nd fav for the Arkle, so i know this will be an interesting challenge for sometime!! May the best judge win!August 10, 2009 at 19:49 #243300Nice wager to add to your antepost portfolio there Grassy!

Nice wager? Sorry to burst your bubble:-
"all being well Mikael first race will be the Drinmore Novice Chase 2m4f at Punchestown or the http://Www.thurlesraces.ie Beginners S’chase 2m2f and that you can take to the bank. He will then be aimed at the RSA chace at Cheltenham"
August 11, 2009 at 11:29 #243341I’d ask for the source, Fist, but what would be the point – he’s got seven months to change his mind, or have it changed for him.
I’ve laid TAPK at Even money (NRNB). I have all other races running for me. I’m perfectly happy with that, and this quote doesn’t change a thing, me old china.

Got a source for that quote Fist??
Cooldine and Missed That both started their chasing careers in that Thurles race.
However, the Drinmore is at Fairyhouse not Punchestown as stated above! Also, I very much doubt that Willie would start a horse off over fences in a grade one contest, let alone a horse as good as Mikael D’haguenet.
My source close to the yard is normally on the money and nothing as far as Cheltenham has been decided. Given that the yard also have a classy stayer in Fiveforthree and Mikael has the gears for two miles I don’t think Willie would be nailing himself to the RSA at this stage.

Alverton is the only horse ever to have won an Arkle and go on to win a Gold Cup. Wasn’t the best Arkle ever run by a long way either.
The meer suggestion the Mikael will go for the Arkle nowadays with the speed horses that are around is laughable.
Something like 9 of the last 12 winners have ran in the QMCC the following year. Though Kicking King is an exception and did take the Arkle (2nd) Gold Cup path.
The only horse I can think of who had the engine and could have won both is Kauto Star and even he failed to win the Arkle. Usually horses Likw Mikael who go chasing lose a bit of toe when they get a bit older and end up either more dependant on speed or Stamina not both.
If you have a horse who has Gold Cup written all over him the last thing on earth you are going to do is put him among speed horses and possibly ruin him before you start. Mikael D’Haguenet looks every inch a stayer as we saw on his last appeance. The very fact he went the longer route in the Ballymore this season indicates that is where his future lies.
Why on earth would Willie Mullins change his mind he’s already said he sees no reason why the horse shoud not go the Gold Cup route this season? The day the Arkle becomes a trial for the Gold Cup China will stop producing tea.
August 12, 2009 at 14:33 #243488The reasons Mikael went the Ballymore route last season are twofold:
1. Mullins had Cousin Vinny for the Supreme, and did not want to run them against each other
2. Mikael was the more proven over the pair over a 2m4f+ tripFor staying novice chases this season, Mullins has Fiveforthree as well as (potentially) Mikael D’Haguenet. If both progress as expected, he will:
1. Likely not want to run them against each other
2. Likely send the horse with proven stamina over the longer tripGiven Mikael will (very likely) not see a journey of 3m over fences prior to the Festival – and therefore not entirely have proven his stamina – and given that Fiveforthree is already proven over 3m (kept on very strongly in soft ground at Punchestown), it is entirely possible that Mikael will swerve the RSA Chase……….assuming Fiveforthree has shown top novice form himself.
As I said in a message to TAPK after we had agreed our wager, it would come as no surprise to see Mikael given an entry for the RyanAir Chase at the Festival…….assuming he progresses as well as we all hope. The intermediate division does not look particularly strong for the upcoming season, and it might be the solution to keeping the pair apart, whilst avoiding a run over the minimum trip at the same time.
I have all other Festival races onside, as regards this bet. I couldn’t give a hoot if he doesn’t run in the Arkle……just so long as he doesn’t run in the RSA Chase either!

Not sure that applies as strongly as it once did, Fist:
Kauto Star (2007/09 Gold Cup winner): Ante-post Arkle favourite in 2006, missed the race through injury.
War of Attrition (2006 GC winner): 11/4 Arkle favourite in 2005.
Kicking King (2005 GC winner): Second to Well Chief in 2004 Arkle, having won the Irish Arkle.
Best Mate (2002-04 GC winner): Hot(?) ante-post favourite for the 2001 Arkle, Festival scrapped due to foot and mouth.
Basically, since the turn of the century, only Looks Like Trouble and Denman have won the Gold Cup having been campaigned as stayers in their novice season, and both were wide-margin winners of the RSA.
