Binocular, who was defeated in the Champion Hurdle by Punjabi, a two-time Grade 1 winner and very close 2nd in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle, has been crowded the Champion Hurdler at the Anglo-Irish jump awards. For what exactly? Winning a 5-runner race at Ascot?
Given that both the Champion Hurdler + Solwhit have both won 2 Grade 1s this season, surely the voting should have only been between these 2? They’ve even declared Binocular as the best hurdler on ratings, putting him on 169 ahead of the 166-rated Punjabi.
Can anybody shed any light as to why this has happened?

Many reasons and some pretty straight forward ones.
Binoclular is a better all round horse and not all races are run at Cheltenham.
When Cool Dawn e.g. won the Cheltenham Gold Cup would you rate him the best chaser in the country? Hardly.
If Punjabi had been in that 5 horse race at Ascot do you think he could have beaten Binocular?
How does Punjabi rate against Solwit? How would Binocular fair against Solwit round the likes of Ascot? Who do you think would be favourite for the race?
Had AP McCoy known Binocular stayed the 2 miles at Cheltnham as well as he did he most likely would have gone earlier and won.
One race whether it be the Champion Hurdle or not doesn’t make a champion.
I think there’s a very good reason Binocular is disputing favouritism with Hurricane Fly for the renewal and Solwit Punjabi and Celestial Halo are bigger prices.
Hurricane Fly may prove to be a better horse than Binocular, but I couldn’t see either of the first two in the Champion Hurdle ever beating him again.
May 21, 2009 at 13:54 #229186These awards are based on ratings and, well, ratings are ratings. They don’t allow at all for achievement, they are based solely on performance, and I have absolutely no problem in calling Binocular’s demolition job at Ascot the best performance by a 2m hurdler in Britain in Ireland in 2008/9.
May 21, 2009 at 20:25 #229246Give me Celestial Halo every time over Binocular at Cheltenham! who gives a monkeys if Binocular beats him everywhere else! Next year with a little tweak here and there in running Celestial will win the Champion Hurdle! Hurricane will struggle up the hill i"m afraid! and thats coming from
someone who thought he was a cert for the supreme! The Champion hurdle
is what counts and ratings should accomodate it accordingly!May 22, 2009 at 01:02 #229347AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
I’m amazed how you ever make any money out of racing. Does your Mum pay your internet for you to keep you queit
You are of course right in saying he could win but ffs the odds are really stacked against him. I couldn’t even imagine him beating Binocular again another stride or two and he would have been 3rd. AP simply won’t make that mistake again.
Hurricane Fly? I would worry about what he does between now and Chetlenham. There are very few horses in Ireland that look like they can really test him. If he has an easy season wins everything but beats little I wouldn’t have a clue whether he would get up the hill or not in a fast run race. BTW neither would you

I couldn"t imagine Binocular getting past Celestial Halo up the Cheltenham hill as i stated on numerous occassions on the Champion Hurdle threads! Guess what! Punjabi comes and mugs me! Ruby
wont let that happen again!May 22, 2009 at 11:31 #229393Hurricane Fly will glide up the hill, and barely need to come out of second gear to win the next Champion Hurdle.
You will know the fate of Celestial Halo’s chance, as soon as Walsh confirms he will ride for Mullins at Cheltenham……so, say, between 6-8 minutes after he’s won the AIG.

If my memory serves me! It was you who had the Foresight to back the Hurricane to win the Supreme at 175 i believe, so not wanting to rain on your parade i hope the Hurricane runs against one of the Big boys, just
to establish some sort of pecking order! What concerns me with him is that everything is done effortlessly, the amount of times these types
fold when they come under pressure is my concern! Celestial on the other hand wants to fight and responds to pressure! Effortless is not a word he recognises! Bring it on! Only 299 days to go!!May 22, 2009 at 21:48 #229494Sadly, nothing like 175, and it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.
Regardless, it’s merely a matter of collecting. Hurricane Fly won’t be found wanting for pace, he won’t be found wanting for stamina, he won’t be found wanting for ground conditions, and he won’t be found wanting for track configuration either.
This horse is the real deal, and will smoke everything that is put in front of him next.

Now You"re talkin Grass! Loving your confidence! Good luck to you! But just remember this Celestial is a man! Hurricane is just a boy!!
May 22, 2009 at 23:19 #229503They’re the same age??
Celestial Halo has probably missed his chance a bit like Osana in ’08. Ruby won’t be on anything other than Hurricane Fly after he pishes up in the Morgiana.

Imperial, 2 18yr old lads! One has been fighting/killing in Iraq, He"s had women in Amsterdam, drunk with men! Lost his wages in Casino"s etc
The other still lives at home with his mum, who cooks and washes for him
he"s just started college, studying Art, never even kissed a girl!
Thats the difference between Celestial Halo and the Hurricane and yet
they are the same age! Ones a street fighter, the others got a lot to learn
By the way Ruby wants to win the Champion hurdle! For Paul Nicholls!May 23, 2009 at 00:03 #229520I wouldn’t write Binocular off just yet on the basis that his 4 & 5 y/o form could possibly hold up to Binoculars Chletnham form as a 5 y/o at least.
Binocular at 4 got beat by 16 L in the triumph hurdle, then came third in the Champion Hurdle at 5 being done by 6 Lengths. We all know what happened at 6.
Binolcular came 2nd in the supreme novices as a 4 y/o receiving 8 pounds, then obviously got beat by a nick and a head as a 5 y/o in the Champons Hurdle.
To say that he will never get up the hill is a wreckless assumption, and possibly not a fact but we won’t know until the next champions hurdle.
What price does anyone want to give me on Captain Cee Bee ??

Take the 14/1 for the Arke mate if you are keen on him!May 23, 2009 at 10:57 #229564If Ruby wants to win a Champion Hurdle for Nicholls he best tell him to line something up for the Scottish version since there’s no way in hell that he’ll be winning it any time soon.

You did dodge the rest of my comments though which point towards Binocular having every chance at 6. Although i’d imagine Albertas Run will finish getting round in the Gold Cup before you tackle a positive comment that might put a bit of doubt in your head with regards to your Champion Hurdle opinion.
May 23, 2009 at 11:49 #229570Captain Cee Bee more likely to re-appear in novice chases than conditions hurdles, I would have thought GTD?
