Unconfirmed reports suggest Harry is about to get a bit more than the ‘slap on the wrist’ he’d asked for. On the blog.
June 11, 2010 at 10:44 #299922Well Sean,
the man who invented the adage –your can’t be a winner in racing unless you bet in thousands
is possibly preparing himself for a short head.
June 11, 2010 at 11:08 #299927Blimey!
To be fair, he seems more upset than incensed.
June 11, 2010 at 11:13 #299929Although he is beginning to get a bit more incensed now…
June 11, 2010 at 11:27 #299933For a man who repeatedly emphasises the importance of his reputation, he really has made a remarkable choice of main jockey.
June 11, 2010 at 12:05 #299940I bet there are plenty of trainers today who are none too happy with the state of this mess. How many horses will be unable to run before January next year? Loads. Including Denman who may have been back at Newbury to defend his crown.
I never really bought his story that he accidently laid Gullible Gordon either.
Shame that Denman may be remembered more for one of his owners than for the wonderful racehorse he has been.
June 11, 2010 at 12:17 #299946Rightly or wrongly I am sure they will still be able to run Denman because of its joint ownership
June 11, 2010 at 12:29 #299950Congratulations to your source Sean – he had it spot on.
Strong message to all owners.
Ban means horses registered in his mother’s name can’t run but as I understand it from reports they (Findlay et al) are trying to get the registrations changed to allow the horses to run so hopefully Denman won’t be AWOL for long.
Betfair aren’t happy. They’re saying the following: "When the rule was introduced the then Jockey Club made clear that it was a rule that necessarily had to be applied in spirit as well as in law. We do not believe the punishment to be proportionate or, for that matter, consistent with similar offences in the past. We will continue to welcome Harry as a customer."
Presumably, although I wouldn’t know so could be wrong, Harry is an important player for them.
June 11, 2010 at 12:33 #299952This looks disproportionate and therfore exemplary…grounds for appeal surely.
June 11, 2010 at 12:34 #299953Mack,
Harry has been inside the famousBetfair Lounge
June 11, 2010 at 12:45 #299958I like the man, hope they can find a solution to this. 6 months ban for him is not correct. He has brought a lot to the sport and will suffer even more now for speaking so openly on Get On today imo. Doesnt he realise servants should accept being beaten and castigated and retire below stairs again to lick their wounds.
Glad to see Betfair supporting himJune 11, 2010 at 12:58 #299959I think he has been lucky! He could have got 18 months.
Because he is so high profile attention is on him, on the other hand he may have got let off lightly because of this too, hard to tell. He did not do himself any favours in my opinion by using his defense of accidently laying Gullible Gordon.
No one believes that one, especially those who were listening to his case.
I don’t think he would win an appeal either.
His horses are half owned by him and half his Mother on paper. So unless someone buys out his half the horses cannot run. I would imagine that Barber will buy Denman.
He may be a nice guy but he is a little too big mouthed for me, and seems to lack common sense. Truly hyper active! Not one of my heroes in racing.
June 11, 2010 at 13:45 #299963Couldn’t he just lease the horses to someone and come to an ‘arrangement’?
June 11, 2010 at 14:11 #299967The rules are clear – he broke them, end of.
He could have received an 18 month ban so, arguably, he has got off lightly.
He is a professional gambler for goodness sake – to say he did not understand the rules just does not wash.
He thought he could get away with it because of who he is.
I have no axe to grind with Findlay but the fact he has "brought a lot to the sport" should have no bearing whatsoever. However how many punters have lost out due to some of his gambles?

FB,
I’ve pressed the wrong (laying) button before now, then backed it to win much more. Which is exactly what Harry did, only a minute after laying it. Perfectly believable.Think the fact you don’t like the bloke clouds your judgement.
I know he could’ve got 18 months, but to my mind it’s Guilty on a technicality. 6 months is a bit strong, but then again there needs to be a deterrent.
Value Is EverythingJune 11, 2010 at 15:05 #299973Just heard about the six month ban through timeform radio & read the release through the press association. He has seemingly got involved in the popular back to lay strategy with the betting exchanges on two occasions with his horse Gullible Gordon & therefore should have known better, as he is not a stranger to the betting world. There seems to be alot of this going on recently in the sporting world & hopefully the fear of exposure will take the place of the greed factor.
