    Why is it bookmakers work to a bigger over-round in "betting without the favourite" markets, than they do "with" the favourite? That, despite there being one fewer runner.

    Are they just taking advantage of fewer bookmakers betting on it?

    Bookmakers make the books to suit themselves, they have a bigger over-round because the lack of competition means they can. If you were to look at some of the books offered on-course for the away meetings I’m sure they would contravene trading standards if they existed!

    For the same reason that only 1 or 2 bookmakers betting on any meeting would be able to carve up the market to suit.
    It’s a daft bet anyway, as someone who clerked for such a bookmaker once told me – any liabilty could be easily covered by a bet at the proper price, with a f/c the fav to beat it – which is what the punter should do in the first place.
