The 4.10 at Lingfield this afternoon perfectly illustrated why punters are walking away from this sport in droves. I was in my local Corals and I had a bit of a brainwave for Lady Micklegate. On paper it looked like it might do something. Lots of odd things happen on that benighted track so I thought what the hey? I got it at 14s; shortly after that it started to come in. It ended up at 8s. Stalls open, off they go. No mention of the horse. The two idiots commentating mentioned it ‘was still at the start’ and said no more. Race over. Nothing more said. Back to the interminable dog racing (God I hate dog racing). Eventually one of the commentators says, oh, Lady Micklegate refused to race. Shame you can’t get your money back because the gates opened.
‘Shame,’ I announced to the shop. ‘SHAME? It’s a ******* DISGRACE! What a c***ish, crust-swiping, artful, low-down, semi-criminal, ******s’ game this is!’
‘Tell me about it,’ said Del the wide-boy. ‘It’s a wonder that tannoy or them TV screens don’t get ripped off the wall sometimes, innit? I bet there’s bin some words at Lingfield. There was some money coming for that horse as well.’
I agreed. Then I had another bet (Incorporation at Utto. At least my jumps form reading was reasonable).
Del wandered over to the roulette. “’Kin’ better off with playing these things, intcha, sometimes?’
