Seeing the thread about old well chief being retired…Many people feel he was the best horse never to win a champion chase….Who do we feel are the best horses to have run in but never won the Champion hurdle,Champion chase and Gold cup?
mine;
(from my era anyway )C.hurdle- Large Action
C.Chase- Well Chief
G.Cup- One Man(i know he went on to win a c.c).
Whats everyone elses thoughts?
April 1, 2010 at 10:34 #286896I love Well Chief but the best horse to run in the QMCC and not win one is probably Kauto Star.
April 1, 2010 at 10:39 #286899Dato Star is the best hurdler to run in and not win a Champion Hurdle.
And yah-boo-sucks to anyone who disagrees.

Would have won probably multiple Ryanaiar Chases in his prime if that race were around then.

Just shows how the Ryanair has deprived us of competitive Queen Mother Champion chases since it’s inception.

Thanks for reminding me of Dato Star I was lucky enough to meet him in his stable in malton on a couple of occasions I remember telling him to bite Istabraq’s bum at the start of the champion hurdle & then he’d be in with a chance of winning !!! Broke my heart when he was killed.
Rip Dato Star
April 1, 2010 at 20:33 #287052I’m only a chap so mine would be fairly recent!

If ever a horse was tailor made for a race its the above!
April 1, 2010 at 21:39 #287064Florida pearl, Pendil, Limestone Lad
April 1, 2010 at 22:21 #287075Champion Hurdle – Probably….Brownes Gazette
Champion Chase – a wee mention for Latalomne
Gold Cup – Definitely….Wayward Lad and One ManApril 1, 2010 at 22:56 #287082Easy for me Monet’s Garden, just look at the horses he has beat yet amazingly does not have a big Cheltenham win to his name.
To sum him up, you wouldn’t hear a bigger cheer for a 12/1 shot jumping clear of a favourite for any other horse,

April 2, 2010 at 10:21 #287126My picks would have to be
CH LARGE ACTION
GC WAYWARD LAD
Large Action was a genuine great hurdler and never got the credit he deserved.
Wayward Lad was an absolute machine over three miles with such class on flat tracks but never got up the Cheltenham hill in victory.
I believe an animal called Dawn Run beat him once!! Which for me was heartbreaking but for millions of others was a great result!!April 2, 2010 at 10:59 #287128"detroit orchid" wrote:

direct routeMighty Mogul. We have a mare from his family, but I never saw him run. Was his career ended prematurely? I’ve been told he was a horse with great potential.
