Race 10 at Belmont Park tonight, due off at 10.49pm UK time.
1m2f, Going: Firm.
I think The Foxes must have a great chance.
Fifth in a good renewal of The Derby (winner, runner up and sixth have all won since) and would surely have made the frame but for failing to quite stay the 1m4f.
Previously winner of the Dante Stakes at York over the extended 1m2f on pretty quick ground.
Some useful rivals, but Silver Knott doesn’t look quite as good so far to me at three as he was at two and USA turf horses are often vulnerable to a quality European raider.
The Foxes is already 2/1 from 5/2 with the British bookmakers, but he’s 7/2 on the Morning Line and I’m hoping to get something like that as the race approaches this evening.

and I’m winning the competition at present so will be cheering him home
If I win the overall competition I’ll take Ginger with me to collect my prize and he can search for the princess.
The Foxes is okay, worth his favs tag but I can’t get out of my head how he should have got beat by Classic as a two year old. I guess he has grown and improved
Whatever happened to Classic..

I suspect the style of racing in America will suit him well and he looks the one to beat.
Silver knott has dissapointed but Appleby is always to be feared in these North American turf group 1s, he’s farmed them the last couple of years
He missed the kick last time then pulled too hard and found less than looked likely at the finish. Suspect there’s a good chance he will have come on for that.

Each way from gate one.
FAR BRIDGE
win.July 8, 2023 at 22:54 #1654831Unlucky Ian
Best horse surely finished 2nd
He’s absolutely flown home
July 8, 2023 at 23:00 #1654832Possibly not one of Oisin Murphy’s better rides – not to worry, it was a cracking race and it’s been a good day.

Trouble at the gate tonight and stumbled start derby at Epsom.
These tracks are unforgiving and all chance lost at the start. Always prefer local jockeys on these tracks as they race them frequently and always break well.
In England he’d have had time to recover and would likely have won.
Commentators all over the foxes. Best presenter in the preliminaries and slashed in the betting.
Far Bridge did it well.July 8, 2023 at 23:58 #1654834Cheers, Sam, plenty of fair comment from you there, I think.
And well done with Far Bridge.

Just needed a bit of space to move forward into the last bend . Not far from being a great ride from the 12 stall . Shame he couldnt quite get there .Started quicker could have been trapped out wide in the breeze and doing it tough round first bend .
July 9, 2023 at 07:00 #1654840The best American jockeys negate the bad draw and deal with it.
He was not beaten by the draw.
He was beaten by lack of trackcraft, give that job to an American jockey and the horse would win eased down. The clear paddock pick and heavily backed on course.
Best horse won just a bridge too far for Oisin Murphy, who saves his worst rides for the biggest races.
Serpentine derby comes to mind.
Mark of a good jockey though, learn from them and come back stronger.
Serpentine derby probably an extreme example as the whole field were blindsided there.
There is plenty of more recent big race examples this season. Left at the stalls, stumbled start. He is still my go to jockey on the all weather though.July 9, 2023 at 07:23 #1654841The owners rep quoted in racing press drawn wide they were going to go back and hope for luck day before race so in that respect Murphy followed instructions .
July 9, 2023 at 08:24 #1654845I appreciate The Foxes made a slow start from a wide draw, but Oisin Murphy had ample opportunity to take closer order and initially he did begin an early forward move to do that, but it seemed to me he then allowed the horse to drop back again at a crucial part of the race.
He was in an impossible position turning for home and it is to the horse’s credit he finished so close.
Who would you back if they all met again on the same terms?
Nearly a great ride?
Well, I guess you could say it would have been a great ride by Greville Starkey if Dancing Brave had got up on the line in The Derby in 1986, but I suspect the actual verdict would have been he had dodged a bullet.
Same deal here for me.
Murphy is a good jockey, but not one of his better efforts in my view.
Game of opinions, as always, though.
It was certainly a cracking race and I was too full of marmalade sandwiches to get upset about it – onwards and upwards!
