are bl++dy annoying. Endlessly repeating the same info, believing that there should be absolutely no silence; they must prattle about something, anything.
Carson, Persaud, Balding – CAN’T YOU JUST KEEP QUIET FOR A FEW SECONDS? And as for Loughran – I give up.
The faux excitement that demands they mention every last trivial thing! Gordon Bennett!
Bring back John RickmanOctober 5, 2008 at 20:14 #183571Bring back John Rickman
Get the spade out, he died in 1997 ………..
October 5, 2008 at 20:26 #183577Toughest job in racing –
Aidan O’Brien?
Frankie Dettori?
Dandy Nicholls secretary at Ayr Gold Cup entry stage? No… almost certainly Clare Balding’s assignment. Wasn’t quite sure where he was going with the ‘frogs’ conversation he was having with Yves St. Martin but I’m pretty sure Clare, and most of her production team I’d suspect, were quaking in their boots as Wille rambled on. She should be having the time of her life doing what she would probably describe as a dream job but she frequently looks as though she’s relieved to get through another programme without Willie putting both feet in it.
October 5, 2008 at 20:34 #183582Hello,
What’s left of poor old Rickman could put up a better show than Carson, who is and has been embarassing for years.
If he could only pronounce the names of horses’ correctly that would be a start, then he could perhaps give us some insight into a horse that is actually in the race being covered by the TV. It appears Willie just doesn’t do any pre-race research, as say, Big Mac who has the Stats. etc on hand immediately.
I rated Willie as one of the best jockeys of all time, what makes him or indeed BBC producers, think he can fulfil a role of TV pundit/commentator?? He cannot, and there is absolutely nothing wrong in admitting so.
It is painfully obvious when he prattles to jockeys, trainers and owners, they just do not want to be there..as Willie just talks garbage..all very embarassing for the interviewed and the viewer..
Balding is professionalism personified, how she puts up with Willie is beyond me. She probably just shuts her eyes and thinks of her bank balance.
Ritchie is just a big school boy locked in a sweet shop overnight, but adequate.
Angus is irrelevant.regards,

October 5, 2008 at 20:58 #183592Cut the wee man a bit of slack here.
Ok, he gets tongue tied, forgets names, mispronounces names, gets mixed up over who won what, and when – but he’s enthusiastic and is never rude to anyone.
I think he probably has too much racing information crammed into that wee head of his.

October 5, 2008 at 21:10 #183599Hello,
Exactly Himself, a terribly nice guy, (or appears to be, I wouldn’t like to be on the wrong side of him ), but is he up to fronting BBc’s racing shows, no matter how limited they are.
Quite frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me if the BBC didn’t give a toss who presented the racing, it won’t be long before it is replaced by women’s cricket, handball or underwater mountaineering…
The use of Willie as a front man just demonstrates the interest the BBC demi-gods have of Racing….Zilch!!, and it won’t be long until Clare Balding will have to jump ship to avoid going down with the same sinking vessel…
regards,
doyley
October 5, 2008 at 22:05 #183605Exactly the same thread as last year…
Willie still talking nonsense
Rishi still asking inane questions
Claire doing a good job to hold things together.Same time next year…
October 5, 2008 at 23:16 #183619at least we got to see plenty of live pictures of the horses before the arc unlike the way ch4 seems to cover big races now.
i thought i would never find myself saying that bbc racing is now better than ch4! why has ch4 dumbed down so much to be a terristrial sis?October 5, 2008 at 23:27 #183621Agree with you about that.
Before Youtube took down a lot of old races they had one which was C4 covering the Derby back in the days of John Oaksey and Francome with Brough Scott and it has 10mins of coverage of the Dash.
Such a pleasure to see with paddock coverage excellent bar none and showing horses travelling to the start and a complete difference to how it is now.
October 5, 2008 at 23:52 #183625I thought the coverage was first class, not too dumbed-down, with Balding doing a fine professional job as usual, and Persad seems to have improved a lot recently.
Carson, as usual, got a bit mixed up at times, but overall was ok.
McGrath’s commentaries were pretty accurate, and he’d made plenty of effort to pronounce people’s and horse’s names correctly, Loughran take note.
Mosse’s contributions were excellent.
The camerawork was stunning at times, particularly the slow-mos.
Better than C4 could have done, imo.
October 6, 2008 at 00:02 #183627I thought it was awful, as usual. BBC racing is only on every now and then and each time I end up thinking "oh no, he’s not still doing it is he?" about every single member of the team. Clare Balding does NOT need Willie Carson, she can do the job very professionally on her own. Jim and Angus are just past it now and Rishie, who I usually find fairly tolerable was WAY to overexcited to manage to string a sensible sentence together today. It didn’t help that he was trying to interview foreigners.
I think whoever said it is right, I doubt the BBC cares enough to bother changing the line-up.

I wouldn’t have thought that would have been down to the BBC, Ven.

October 6, 2008 at 00:53 #183640The camerawork was stunning indeed, but as stated, it hat nothing to do with the Beeb; Angus Loughran and Rishi Persad were appalling today and we know exactly what to make of Willie by now. It was a complete embarrassment, if not unexpected.
October 6, 2008 at 01:27 #183647Carson was always going to struggle to pronouce the name of Overdoses rider, although I’m relieved that he didn’t exactly call him ‘Andreas Sodb*ll*cks’, which was worst case scenario. And I loved it when he said the Abbaye would be run in around 90 seconds!!! Where’s it being held? Mont Blanc??

October 6, 2008 at 01:59 #183661I think Equidia were responsible for the excellent camerawork, but that shouldn’t detract from what the BBC itself did. A lot of sports broadcasts use pictures that are not strictly produced by that broadcaster’s own camera crews.
October 6, 2008 at 02:03 #183663It’s always baffled me how we can have those fancy graphics superimposed over the track but we still can’t get a decent camera position to cover the Abbaye. Not the Beeb’s fault presumably but still goes to show where the programme-makers priorities are.

How about the rubbish camera angles on the 7f races?
Going to the 2nd winning post and we’re looking at the horses running off screen towards the post! Cant tell who’s in the lead
