When interviewed on RUK yesterday Ayr PR Chief Ian Ferguson stated that fields for the 3 sprints were to be reduced not for safety reasons but shockingly because of overseas media rights.

Later on RUK Lydia Hislop said that what Ian Ferguson had said was totally incorrect and the fields would not be reduced but it still states on the Ayr racecourse website that the fields will be 24.

How odd, why would the Ayr PR chief say something like that if there was no truth in it and why does it say 24 runners on their website?

Sounds very fishy to me, Gordon "broony" Brown has also tweeted the fields for the 3 races will be cut to 24. I smell a rat.

210 entries for the Ayr Cups in the end including the most optimistic entry of the 51-rated Manatee Bay (certain money back if left in though!).

A card full of 6f handicaps in future maybe? Pewter Cup, Tin Cup, Coffee Cup, Tea Cup, Egg Cup, Paper Cup anyone?

I note that there are 27 runners in each contest, so either there was a change of heart or Ian Ferguson was off the mark.

I’ve never been to the course but the sprint races puzzle me. Time and again the far side are infront for maybe 4 furlongs, then the near side / high numbers seem to find 4 or 5 lengths. Is the track uneven on that side ?

I think it’s an optical illusion that makes it seem the far side seem in front. If you use the furlong markers to gauge where they are I’d say the near side was at least level if not marginally in front for much of the way in today’s big field sprints.

I thought Ashpan Sam was leading early in the race. When they run on to the proper course, he’s definitely infront of the high numbers. I think they’re level at the 2 marker.
Almost as if the low numbers are on the ‘ hypotenuse ‘ and have slightly further to travel !!

I remember Fonthill Road ( classic old Fahey fiddle ) winning on his own though but even then 4 of the first 6 home were still drawn high

Don’t they realise how much hard work is involved putting a line through these races?
