Very good race this and so many top quality sprinters. Seems a terrific renewal!
Where will you be picking your winner from? Low, middle or high?
Will you favour a horse that goes on a ground in a poor draw?
I’m on a shortlist of five and am finding it extremely hard to wittle down to a managable number. I can’t justify betting on five
September 19, 2008 at 07:26 #181589Is it compulsory for you to have a bet in the race?
Colin
September 19, 2008 at 11:11 #181615A high draw is currently favoured but some are saying they will get a lot of traffic there over the course of the meeting so the fresher ground on the other side may be best. A horse that really likes heavy ground is preferable to where drawn imo.
September 19, 2008 at 12:22 #181625living not far from ayr and knowing the amount of rain we have had here for the last 2 months i am surprised the west coast has not floated away, the ground is very bad, and the middle of the course has some bad patches,i am told,i think i will stick to southern courses tomorrow, but good luck with your choice
September 19, 2008 at 14:13 #181638I must be one of those rare racing enthusiasts who absolutely loathes big sprint handicaps.
nigh impossible to solve.
I see them as no more than bookies’ benefits. Why do you think they are triping over each other to sponsor such races year after year.

"You get good prices in those races".
Yeah you bloody need them.
September 19, 2008 at 14:57 #181644So am I – One middle distance handicaps interest me as there is less chance of things going wrong generally.
September 19, 2008 at 18:35 #181654Indian Trail @ 50-1
Raptor @ 50-1
Apalachian Trail @ 50-1
Dabbers Ridge @ 28-1
Dhaular Dhar @ 28-1
All playable prices, Ive always thought the ayr gold cup is a bookies race, because it is usually on soft ground, and most of the form is coming from gd-fm, but the ground in the run up to this years has been abissmal. Wouldnt be surprised if River Falcon slaps me in the face after going down in a photo last week.
September 19, 2008 at 18:37 #181655Seems like the low numbers had the best of it today in the SC, but I had already decided what horse I was betting no matter what it was drawn and no matter the result of the SC!
The horse in question is Ishetoo and it is drawn 19. Maybe not an obvious one at 33/1 and it does seem to be a 5f specialist, as 5 of its 6 wins have come at that distance and those 5 wins have come on good or faster.
What attracts me apart from the price is that it has won at Ayr over 6f on GS ground. The ground is obviously going to be more testing than that with it being heavy, but there’s a bit of form that gives me hope! 2 runs back the horse finished 4th at York on heavy ground over 6f and the horse reportedly stayed on strongly final furlong, nearest finish, which is encouraging. If you can handle York heavy, then I’m sure the horse can be competitive at Ayr.
Summing up, I think Ishetoo is a sporting ew bet at 33/1 and have bet it first 5 with Bet 365.
September 19, 2008 at 22:27 #181668Colin, it is not only compulsory to have a bet on the AGC, but the DONE THING!
Dabbers Ridge is the interesting horse here, but the price on the Blue has gone and the draw is potentially gruesome.
This good horse has dropped like a stone in the weights after five bad runs (for which there are major excuses – not least the poor form of the Hills yard at the time).
Form on soft or heavy ground: 1235311
Form at 6f/7f on soft or heavy ground 125311
Unbeaten at 6f, on soft or heavy ground, in Class 2.Barry Hills used to love Ayr in the old days and this has all the hallmarks of an old fashioned punt waiting to happen. Raptor is 1152 at 6 or 7f on soft or heavy ground and has a big chance on old form. There is surprisingly little substantive heavy ground form in the race and everything is ripe for an upset result.
September 20, 2008 at 12:28 #181709I will try Patavellian @ 25/1 ew 5 places,he ran well in the race last year, and the draw looks good.
If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.
September 20, 2008 at 12:40 #181711Hogmaneigh for me. Fonthill Road looked interesting but his draw put me right off.
Of those at bigger prices Skhilling Spirit shouldn’t be completely overlooked.
September 20, 2008 at 13:46 #181723Very small ew on Tamagin, with little confidence.
September 21, 2008 at 13:16 #181837Note to self for next year – narrow the field down to the Nicholls horses and start from there.
