Chelsea have parted company with Avram Grant.
A bit suprised to be honest.
Didn’t think he had done that bad a job.
2nd in the Premiership, got to a Champions League Final and got to a Carling Cup Final.
May 24, 2008 at 21:07 #165171Madness is what i’d call it, but im not suprised because the owner has more money then sense, was more suprised when Mourinho was shown the door after two prem titles in three years. Chelsea were very unlucky in C.L Final and a penalty shoot out could of gone either way, if Chelsea had won that competition or the Premiership would they of kept Grant
my money would be on Rijkaard taking over.Charles Darwin to conquer the World
May 24, 2008 at 22:42 #165182Grant has acted with a quiet dignity throughout this brief tenure at Stamford Bridge, under what must have been persistently trying, uncertain, uncomfortable conditions. He deserves better than that lot.

May 24, 2008 at 22:47 #165183Rijkaard must be long odds on.
Very shabby treatment of Grant, who came across as knowledgable and a man of integrity. He should not be short of alternative offers after doing a great job steadying what looked to be a very rocky Chelsea boat in the aftermath of Mourinho.
Within a game of both the Premiership and the Champions League (within a penalty of the latter in fact) yet still out on his ear.
I’d suggest that if Arsenal have another year like this one then Mr Wenger may be feeling the heat. In fact it would be no surprise to see both Arsenal and Liverpool, along with Chelsea, looking for new managers before next season is out.
Meanwhile old Fergie still sits atop the heap.
May 25, 2008 at 08:15 #165201Rijkaard must be long odds on.
What about Gus Hiddink – I thought he was the preferred candidate when Mourinho left but Abramovic didn’t want to annoy Putin by leaving the Russian team managerless while still in with a chance of qualifying for EURO 2008.
May 25, 2008 at 08:25 #165202A crazy decision, agree totally with earlier comments.
Chelsea do not deserve success if this is how they treat Grant after just one season. What a pity Steve McLaren is no longer available
May 25, 2008 at 09:25 #165219Does anyone else think Avram Grant looks like Colonel Greenback off Dangermouse.
Chelsea are fast becoming the Real Madrid of the English game but sadly for them without the History. Rafa’s got it so easy at Anfield

May 25, 2008 at 13:26 #165277The most surprising thing to me about this sacking is how anyone is surprised.
I thought was inevitable – even if Chelsea had won the CL final.

May 26, 2008 at 10:01 #165406Not Surprised in the slightest they sacked him they won nothing and didnt play the way the "Boss" wants not that i agree with it but thats the way Chelsea are i never thought Jose would go before at least they won the Champions League but he did so no surprise they got rid of a man who makes Wenger look huggable…..
May 26, 2008 at 11:15 #165410I’m slightly surprised by the move to sack Avram Grant, but only because I thought he was brought in to be a ‘yes’ man to Abramovich. I guess now that Rijkaard’s available the Russian thinks he can possibly have his cake and eat it.
May 26, 2008 at 12:05 #165417Abramovitch had a winner in Jose and dispensed with his services to take on a loser. He now has a very big decision to make, for if Chelsea end up pot-less again next season it will self-evidently be his, Abramovitch’s, judgement that is shown to be inadequate, not that of the guy he appoints.
There are only three managers with proven ability to win the Premiership – currently the best league in Europe – and do well in Europe. Neither Ferguson or Wenger would, I suspect, give Abramovitch the time of day, both working for clubs which recognise the benefits of continuity, managerially-speaking, and which have at least as good a chance of Premiership/European success as Chelsea.
That leaves Jose, with whom Abramovitch is said to have had conversations over the last month. Has he the humility to accept he made a mistake and – emulating the Portsmouth Chairman a couple of years ago vis-a-vis Harry Rednap – re-appoint? I doubt it. If not, his options are Premiership managers with potential, such as Mark Hughes, Martin O’Neil and Roy Keane, who have it all to prove in terms of winning the title/achieving success in Europe, or the oft-mentioned band of itinerant foreign managers, some of whom have success in Europe but none has much experience of the pace and physicality of Premiership football.
Personally, I think he’ll go for one of the latter, and if so it will probably be another lean year for Stamford Bridge in terms of silverware.
May 26, 2008 at 19:22 #165486He won’t settle for any of those three IMO

May 27, 2008 at 08:39 #165518I though Grant descending the stairs on Wednesday were some of the most moving scenes I have seen in football. His consoling of his captain was also extremely commendable.
Absolutely – a decent, dignified manager to the last.
Talk this morning appears to be of him being lined up for the Manchester City job now. Is another high-pressure job under a despot (and feel free to swap "des" for "barm" or "toss" if you wish) what the poor bloke really needs?

May 27, 2008 at 13:46 #165597Lot of rubbish on this thread….
Firstly, we do not know what was really going on behind the scenes. Grant was a bizarre appointment in many ways and because he is seemingly a decent bloke, it doesnt mean that he has the respect of the players aor can truely motivate them
As for Jose? Ive had a small bet at long odds on a return….. It has been interesting how thats been developing..must be said
And "potless season" without Wenger or Fergie? Come off it,. What garbage. Grant was just about there wasnt he? Close as can be. Foreign managers need to get used to "pace and physicality" of the (overated) premiership. These top coaches arent exactly think FFS. I think they know how the game is played here
As a Chelsea fan, i do feel increasingly remote from the club it has to be said..but tahts another issue

As regards a forecast of potless at the end of next season if Jose does not return, time will tell. If Chelsea lose the key players the press is speculating may go, I can’t see them getting as close to Man. U next season as they managed this time.
