For the four current UK tracks since January 2006, number of races based on amount of runners.

    Runners — Races
    2 — 6
    3 — 25
    4 — 160
    5 — 309
    6 — 551
    7 — 666
    8 — 821
    9 — 863
    10 — 1055
    11 — 1087
    12 — 1333
    13 — 982
    14 — 527
    15 — 22
    16 — 20

Ignoring the 2, 3, 15 & 16 runner races the average is near as darn, 10 runners

There was an easier way for blue
using pen’n paper and a simple code.

…if you add the numerical alphabet
    A = 1 B =2
and apply it to the word Blue
    you get 2 + 12 + 21 + 5 = 40
find the average by dividing by 4 and you
arrive at 10 in a much simpler way.

I nearly posted this up before you
pen at 1.00 am shortly before I turned in.
Some may remember my investigations into 9/11
on Flutter. I spent four days using
    inspirational codes like the above
    which should not really work,
    but in reality often do
to track down the exact coordinates
of the whereabouts of Bin Laden.

I used a simple pen a paper and
bought and scoured all the the broadsheets.
    utilising big maps of Afghanistan
    and neighbouring Pakistan
    and worked alone,
    often late into the morning,
until I felt as near as
certain I had arrived at the answer.

I have to admit such a task
is beyond me now, as then I
was at my most creative zenith
    and felt nothing was impossible.

    Thanks Pen ‘N’ Paper. :)

Not quite sure what to make of the other reply. Have you been able to get out for your pills during the cold snap… ? :|

Just using Southwell AW and Wolverhampton AW and the years 2006-2010 (5826 races), the average runners in all races came out at

    9.81

    .

I used an excel spreadsheet to calculate.

I agree with Pen ‘N’ Paper average of 10.

    The clue mentions the

    all-weather

, and the item is Bluebook. That might get you thinking about Bluebok in the 3.00.

    Thanks in advance

…from the book.. they were thanking you for betting in advance on the horse and not getting 3-2-1 places for this third finisher.

What did pay 3-2-1? Prince Blue…Blue because he’s without his Princess. Yes another 16 runner handicap bites the dust. Two years now since Lingfield had one.

Sorry folks, it was a trick question. The average number of runners is, of course, always one less than you need.

You’ve just won Dusty Bin Laden.
