Thank you for that explanation Miss Woodford, I assumed more time was needed to help this condition but if bleeding is his problem then obviously it won’t make any difference.
Horses are such complex animals and Auguste Rodin will certainly be causing Ballydoyle some sleepless nights. JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 30, 2023 at 09:46 #1657138Like Green, I wondered if the early season 10 furlong Group 1 at the Curragh might be a target next year. But, as Triptych suggested, I would not be surprised if retirement is considered.
No one can take his Derby win away from him but in my opinion his Irish Derby win is compromised by the ride Heffernan gave the runner up.
O’Brien and The Lads were never enthusiastic about running their Derby winner at Ascotcafter the hard race Galileo had. I doubt yesterday did much to change their minds.
July 30, 2023 at 10:12 #1657141Whatever the problem was with Auguste Rodin, it can’t have been helped by the furious pace set by his stable companions.
On Friday, Ascot staged a 12F Class 2 handicap, run in an overall time of 2m 40.85s. A sensible pace in that race produced a final 3F by the winner in 38.76s.
The King George was run in an overall time of 2m 33.95s, but Hukum covered the last 3F in 39.62s. They were effectively walking by the finish, with only the first two managing to beat 14s for the last furlong. That sort of pace in the first mile that would expose any physical problems and make the defeat look far worse than it would have done in a slower run race.
Look back one year and Emily Upjohn, and to a lesser extent Westover, were left well behind in a fast run race on quicker ground.
July 30, 2023 at 11:51 #1657155Perhaps he’ll be aimed at a race in where Lasix is allowed and then retired. I think Santa Anita permits it, though sure Miss Woodford can correct me if I am wrong.
July 30, 2023 at 13:38 #1657163It would be nice to finish with respectable type. I presume Lasix relaxes the parts…etc
Sad that Julian Wilson isn’t around to give his verdict, or maybe he was watching from his bins in cloud seating yesterday, a mile away from Peter O who was in a high end cloud with better gilded soft duck feather lined seating, all on account of him knowing the box set at Ascot, the Sangsters et al, which paid off in the end, and Julian again seemed to have missed out – even in Shangri La.
He removes his halo which replaces the brown trilby and after his brow knits together to give a sense of seriousness , he let it out..” That was a Pimms poor performance and an example of a horse that has evidently GORN ORF ”
[ his preciously coveted ‘of two year olds’ – notes and records now wrapped and preserved in latex and stored in a fireproof container in a strongroom of some secrecy – makes up an important part of the Wilson heritage – with Julian, the sole family member to make it onto the menace and break through the living room ceiling !]

July 30, 2023 at 14:22 #1657173Going back thirty years … and one Wilson to another – this is what we all miss, seriousness interspersed with a battling smile…
(@pologies a few seconds of ads slipped in )
Peter O and Jimmy Lindley join the party.July 30, 2023 at 16:37 #1657197Santa Anita, as with all tracks in the US, no longer allows Lasix in graded stakes races.
July 30, 2023 at 16:49 #1657199What makes it worse is he’s a lovely mover. I can only think he has some form of muscle issue that’s no shown up. Workforce was very similar, either very good or bombing out. I doubt we will see him again this season. I’d guess they will look at either coming back or retiring. Very frustrating for everybody.
July 30, 2023 at 17:28 #1657207Thanks Miss Woodford. I knew you’d have the latest info!
July 30, 2023 at 18:23 #1657223Yes, I would agree Tonge, Miss Woodford, I find is very well informed. One question I might pose on American racing is this. I know they rake and water between dirt races and the decision of quantity is usually left to the ground master to decide. What about when there is a grass race in between on the programme or rather some and usually interspersed. Do they wait until that is over, then attend to the dirt, or attend directly which would allow the track to dry out slightly, dependant on temperature. Also on the separate question of grass – do they water after individual grass races or not at all or just before the meet or the night before ?
I thought Rodin was all used up and over as a discussion so broadened the template. Apologies I may have overdone it in this thread – albeit being a Sunday.
July 31, 2023 at 02:19 #1657279Miss Woodford is an excellent judge on matters equine full stop .We are lucky to benefit from her expertise and learn from it.
Wit, where the hell are you ?
July 31, 2023 at 02:49 #1657281Ever get the feeling you’ve been frisked ?
July 31, 2023 at 03:49 #1657283Tracks are harrowed and watered right after the end of each race, and then “sealed” by raking dirt over top to prevent drying out.
For turf races if it’s excessively dry they’ll water the night before, but flat tracks want firm ground, so the watering is mainly to keep the grass alive. Softer ground gets ripped up faster and for meets that last several weeks/months they need to keep the turf intact.

Next stop the Breeder’s cup.
If they can nurse him back to fitness, then off to stud.
The sculpture relates to the trainer rather than the horse and his classics names for his runners. Owen Burrows alluded to the fact the pacemaking benefitted everyone else. Surely at that level of competition the horse needs to run on it’s own merits and be pitted tactically against it’s peers?July 31, 2023 at 08:06 #1657288I’m old fashioned and don’t think pacemakers should be allowed.
They should all be running on their merits.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
