Hi
Help please. I’m toying with the idea of getting Sky Plus. My freeviewing options are getting less and less lately. If i’m having sky i’d like one of the racing channels but not sure about cost and value etc.
Anyone with any thoughts.
Thanks

November 1, 2006 at 10:57 #29839Presumably you will be getting a Sky viewing package, in which case you will get ATR for a minimum of £15 a month. It will cost you a further £15 a month for RUK.
November 1, 2006 at 11:20 #29840Your RUK £15 also gets you Racing World, Setanta Sports 1&2, North American Sports Network, Celtic TV and Rangers TV. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether this adds real value.
November 1, 2006 at 15:33 #29841If your interest through the winter lies solely with AW then ATR have all bar Kempton. Not sure who’ll show Great Leighs when/if it gets going.
RUK have all the ‘top’ tracks bar Ascot and have a very good set of pundits (Fremantle, Nevison, Pitterson, Mellish, Neesom, Willoughby, Howard) and most able and erudite presenters in Nick Luck and Lydia Hislop.
RUK’s picture and sound quality is better than ATR and the whole show has a more professional feel about it. And no ads.
Well worth the extra £15pm on top of the Sky subs.
As Yeats has said ATR is included ‘free’ with various Sky packages from £15pm upwards.
November 1, 2006 at 16:38 #29842Better add Simon Rowlands to the list of (potentially) ‘very good’ pundits on RUK:biggrin:

November 1, 2006 at 17:05 #29843I hummed and harred about RUK but once you have it…theres no going back
The rolling replays are essential and addictive. the presentation is first class and i never watch C4 now :)
November 1, 2006 at 23:15 #29844Hi
Thanks for your opinions folks, genuinely appreciated.
I’ve have a much better idea now.
Alex
November 1, 2006 at 23:16 #29845Regardless of whether you choose to get RUK or not I would say definetly get a Sky+ box. Life changing is how I would describe it. No more nagging from the Missus she can tape everything whilst the sports on without the aggro of a VCR.
Not to mention being able to fast forward through adverts.
From a racing point of view being able to rewind races you weren’t even recording is good or not good as you can relive how you got beat by a short nose.

November 22, 2006 at 19:41 #29847This ‘Replaylite’ or whatever it is called sounds decidedly dodgy to me, especially as ebay is involved.
Mark my words, it will all end in tears…….
where else can you get one?
November 22, 2006 at 20:50 #29848Most DVR boxes will let you use a time slip facility.
Most of the stuff I have heard about Sky+ has not been good. I have an LG-RH7500 DVD/HDD recorder. The time slip facility is superb. There are many different DVR models to choose from, and Sagem do a nice Freeview DVR too.
Any hard drive recorder is preferable to paying £10pm to use your own bought and paid for DVR. Apart from all the rumours i’ve read about Sky+ boxes that go tits up just after the warranty runs out.
November 22, 2006 at 21:26 #29849Much as I am loath to sing the praises of the boy Murdoch, his Sky+ box is a gift from the Gods.
Mine’s been perfectly reliable for about 3 years during which time I have given it a hammering.
It should be pointed out though that one can only record onto a fixed hard drive in the unit and not onto CD and thus it cannot really be used for building a ‘library’ of past events.
My extensive collection of northern NH Flat races going back to 1937 has been recorded onto DVD using a seperate machine. Ditto my exciting chronolgy of AW sprint banded races (9yo & upwards).

You can copy to DVD if you have a DVD recorder.

Correct!
I did have an issue with the hard drive in my Sky+ box after two years (a well documented problem) but once I upgraded the drive myself (I can record upto 130 hours of programming including stuff for "ere in doors" i.e eastenders ;) ) its been fantastic. Just the job for recording replays for post race analysis
