Makes his racecourse debut tomorrow in Newton Abbot’s novices’ hurdle… at the age of nine.

I know some horses take longer to mature than others but this certainly isn’t something I’m familiar with throughout my time of watching the sport. I see he passed unsold through a sales ring almost 5 years ago but nothing else is recorded of the horse.

With the very high costs of keeping a horse, I’m very surprised that he’s been kept on the go for nine years without ever once seeing a racecourse. Especially as he has a very unremarkable pedigree and hails from, with respect, a modest yard. Perhaps he’s had a previous occupation?

Can anybody shine any light on this peculiarity and/or tell me if horses making extremely belated debuts was once a more regular occurrence?
