How many women object to the idea of a “Ladies Day”? They seem to be quite popular. Some tracks sell out on such days. Plenty of women seem to be in attendance, all dressed up and enjoying themselves.
Perhaps some women are quite relaxed about this sort of language after all, no matter what the HR department constantly monitoring behaviour for “microaggressions” might think.

Ascot has removed the term “ladies day”.The more I know the less I understand.
August 12, 2023 at 11:21 #1659512And plenty of courses still use the term:

August 12, 2023 at 11:33 #1659516My take is given what women have to deal with in some parts of the world
This would be the definition of first world feminist problems
August 12, 2023 at 11:54 #1659521The fact that there’s much worse inequality elsewhere in the world doesn’t strike me as a good reason to ignore lesser issues in the first world.
And many women are totally relaxed about whether they are called girls, women or ladies. But there can be implications behind these terms which don’t tend to arise nearly so much with men, and who get called gentlemen or boys far less frequently.
I agree with Archipenko that calling female jockeys “women jockeys” would be better than girls or ladies.
August 12, 2023 at 12:01 #1659522I wish Captain Robbo was here. The Shergar Cup was fun when he was around.

August 12, 2023 at 12:12 #1659527On the issue raised earlier about Great Britain and Ireland, I do not see that as a problem either.
Aside from their closeness geographically, the two countries have much in common historically and culturally. Of course, it has not always been harmonious to say the least – but plenty of Irish and British people are joined through kith and kin.
A GB&I team is not unique to racing either. In amateur golf, the Walker Cup is contested by teams from GB&I and the USA. As was the Ryder Cup until the late 1970s when GB&I finally gave up on the unequal struggle.
August 12, 2023 at 12:15 #1659528CAS, I have normally found you a very courteous poster even where we disagree, so I am a bit surprised by that reply.
I am sorry if this discussion is not enjoyable or interesting to you. Nobody is forcing you to take part though.

Fair enough racing is attempting to mix things up a bit and attempt different formats in order to harness interest amongst the masses, but as far as winning ideas go, neither of these are it.
I’d much rather see a jockey format that I can actually get behind, like ‘whites v blacks’ or ‘foreigners v BNP’.
August 12, 2023 at 12:33 #1659540“who get called gentlemen or boys far less frequently.”
I think Halley’s Comet has whizzed past more often than I’ve been referred to as a “gentleman” in my ignoble life.
And now I’m 60 I don’t get referred to as a “boy” that often anymore either.
Like I wrote above, this is a debate that can never have resolution.
All females have different personal attitudes and value systems to other females and some females fail to see that and think they always speak for all females when, actually, they don’t.
Not that men are any better – I’ve always believed any bloke who says: “I speak for everyone when I say….” should be taken outside and shot before they complete their sentence.

Perhaps it would be interesting to ask Hayley Turner, Hollie Doyle and Saffie Osborne for their opinion. They are, on the surface at least, content to ride for a team called “The Ladies”.
If they say they are not happy with the title, then it should be changed. If they are happy, then I do not see the problem.
August 12, 2023 at 12:43 #1659544I think they are probably content with the Ladies Team as they have won it three times and I think it gave them huge joy to beat the boys/men/gents/other gender.
The more I know the less I understand.
August 12, 2023 at 12:45 #1659545Don’t worry Refuse, the world will soon put right to that when the likes of Ryan Moore can identify as a woman and compete for either team. I presume we are also close to a time where Mr. Moore can identify as an apprentice and start claiming 7lbs again.
August 12, 2023 at 12:46 #1659546The point I was trying to make is the Shergar Cup is a one-off, fun event. It is not an important meeting. I do not particularly like the team aspect but the days works well enough and has a bit of a different, relaxed vibe. I don’t think it does any harm and at least it is not stretched out over several days like the Racing League.
Captain Robbo’s thread two years ago was brilliant. It made the event very enjoyable.
But if the Shergar Cup is going to get dragged into the tedious gender and culture wars, then perhaps it is not worth bothering with.
