Is anyone going over? I am going over with a friend, would be happy to meet up with fellow forum members for a beer at longchamp on the Sunday if anyone fancies it..
September 25, 2009 at 16:42 #250069Looks like it’s just me and my mate at the mo

Has anyone who has been before got any advice? Do they have race cards? I presume they do, but are they only in French though? Is there a Racing Post stand there in anticipation of a lot of Brits being there who want a copy?
Do we need to set off very early from Paris? Etc etc?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks!
September 25, 2009 at 19:30 #250095Depends if you are going for the day or not – ther can be queues to get in if you have not paid in advance.
Racecards are free and there isn’t really a language issue with them as they are mainly pictorial – there are English course guides available.
If you buy the Racing post in the week leading up to the weekend it will list vendors in Paris – there are plenty of them.
Like all big meetings arrive as early as possible – it does get very crowded.
I do it as a day trip – flying out at 7:55 I get to the course about 11:15 and come back on a late evening flight – there are free shuttle buses from the metro to the course and back afterwards.
September 25, 2009 at 20:07 #250099Cheers Paul!
We are going for the weekend, Friday morning back Monday night.
We haven’t paid in advance, I heard you just pay at the gate – EUR 8?
Thanks for the advice regarding picking up a Racing Post, we won’t know half the horses so will want to read up about all the entries before losing our money!

A good way of doing it – in that case, especially as it is your first time, I would strongly recommend going racing on the Saturday as well. It is very much quieter and will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the place before the big day on Sunday. The racing is also good quality.
If there is a group of you then on the Sunday I suggest you grab a vantage point and if you wnat to go to bars and put bets on then you do it in shifts so you retain your vantage point.

I believe it is around €8 – very good value

Not sure how light you are travelling or if you are taking a laptop with you, but if I was going for the weekend I would put my bets on online before going racing. Remember on-course it is PMU (Tote) only and whilst there are plenty of places to bet the queues can be hell and, not being zenophobic here, the PMU is nothing like as efficient as our Tote.
September 26, 2009 at 13:06 #250168I’d call up the firms from your mobile phone in the morning – most have an international freephone number though think you still have to pay from mobiles.
Would expect most firms to price up all the group races at Longchamp
September 26, 2009 at 22:13 #250240Yeah, open a phone account and ring in your bet from there, queueing to put a bet on Arc day is a living nightmare.
September 26, 2009 at 22:40 #250249I was there when Carrolls House won (did i get that right?) and one bloke put £300 (equivalent of) on him on the PM and went beserk as he crossed the line
He then when mental when he realised that the number on the slip was wrong…
Very mental…..
use the phone
September 26, 2009 at 22:50 #250252Not sure about this year, but, in the past,
there was a British Tote set-up – with the RP on sale quite nearby – all inside the course.Porte Maillot is the key station, btw.
September 27, 2009 at 02:04 #250307Hi everyone
I will be attending Longchamp for Arc day. My first visit to the Arc so it will be a learning curve and a half I expect. Some advice I have been given is to place all bets before the first race as it can become very difficult once the racing has started. For the big race itself I will be placing my bets before I leave for France or more than likely, utilising the hotels Wi Fi connection and jumping on Betfair before leaving for the track.
Regards
Ben Aitken
September 27, 2009 at 02:46 #250315Cheers guys.
From your advice I think I will put all my bets on via my mobile calling William Hill back in the UK. I have an account with Sporting Bet too but they are useless and you can’t place bets on the phone.
September 27, 2009 at 02:57 #250317You can also use Auteuil metro station, it is right outside Auteuil race track, and do’nt forget the buses to Lonchamp are free. I actualy drove there last time i went geting there was’nt to bad, going home was like rush hour on the M25.
September 27, 2009 at 03:02 #250319HI SEAUN
Where have you been.Im not sure about the Tote part but if you want a Racing Post get there early because they soon sell out.
September 27, 2009 at 14:57 #250378There is shuttle buses from Port Malliot aswell, its just as easy getting a cab down and the bus back, getting a cab is another nightmare after the arc, unless you are willing to shell out a tonne you have to wait 3 hours for a cab, have a good time mate, I’ll be in the James Joyce pub around midday before heading down for some light refreshments

Indeed – Porte D’Auteuil metro station isn’t far from the course either if you fancy a nice walk alongside the park.
