I know it’s not popular to knock him at the moment but has anybody got any stats on the percentage of falls he has in chases?
Great jock over hurdles but i find myself saying "there he goes again" on a regular basis.

His strike rate over hurdles and fences is the same so it’s probably just a result of falls being more likely over fences than hurdles.

Obviously he doesn’t fall off everything!

He’s probably better in long distance races where speed is reduced and there’s more time to decide long or short.

Here’s a few figures for AP when compared to a combined effort of the next 10 "most winning" jockeys in chases. Stats are based on the last 1000 rides.

    UR – AP 2.8% : 2.3%
    Fell – AP 3.9% : 4.4%
    BD – AP 0.5% : 0.4%
    PU – AP 11.9% : 14.8%

Hope the numbers help, AP seems to have cleaner breeches than some. :D

My first memory of AP was when I went to Stratford. I had backed this 7 or 8/1 shot in a 7 horse race. He was travelling ok with about 1 1/4 miles to run when all of a sudden he went from 4th place into first and absolutely booted his horse into the next fence and went about 4 lengths clear. It was such an irratic move my first thought "was what an idiot he’s gone way too soon". At the next fence he went at it like his life depended on it and his horse stood a mile off it and gained even more distance on the field……needless to say the horse won and by some way and I’ve been a fan ever since.

I couldn’t count amount of races AP won in his early days on moderate animals by making brave moves like and stealing race after race by knowing exactly when to ask a horse to go and never hesitating going into a fence.

The thing about AP back then was he feared nothing and that inspired confidence in the horses he rode.

    Not a lot has changed.

Nowadays when he does come off one because he’s AP McCoy it stands out in your mind Jumpsfan.

He’s the champion he’s not meant to fall off.

The figures seem to show i’m wrong but betting’s all about opinion, and i’ve seen enough poor rides in chases to put me off backing him. Good luck to the rest of you who side with him but i need to have confidence in the rider when i put my meagre wager down so i’ll continue to look elsewhere.
I’d be interested to hear from you all who watch racing every day to point out when horses have jumped well for him and also when they haven’t.

Straw Bear….AP couldn’t get him to run and jump if you gave him a taiser gun he’s top class but hates people especially Tony McCoy

Even although he fell last time Albert’s Run had always jumped well for AP but didn’t do so well under Robert Thornton or Domenic Elsworth.

Don’t Push It would always mange to make a hash of at least one hurdle when least expected and manage to dump AP at Cheltenham….I’d say he gave him not too bad a ride in the Grand National.

To eliminate AP out of your bets I would advise you not to bet in any race he rides in because you you are starting from a minus situation if you do.

Your talking about a man who’s ridden more winners in the last fornight than most jockeys ride in a full season..aren’t you being a tiny bit rash?

As i said it’s all about opinion… last season there were several horses i backed and you may say they would have jumped poorly anyway or had an off day or had been raised in class but, they were horses i rated highly who were good jumpers running on ground and on courses which suited them but AP seemed to create indecision in them. Also these were horses that he was riding for the first time so his style maybe doesn’t suit certain horses.

They were Will Be Done (McCain) at Ascot and Killyglen at Sandown (Johnson) as well as putting High Jack (Turnell) on the deck at Ascot. This is where the rot set in for me.

I’d be very happy to back him in bumpers and over hurdles because he’s the strongest around.

He often asks a lot from his horse, and generally gets it. Horse and jockey are at full stretch, and if the horse can’t quite have its mind made up to go long the consequences can look ugly.

That, I think, is why those home-straight falls of his look so spectacular, and lodge so strongly in the memory compared against those of other riders.

The statistics, as has been ably pointed out, don’t support the contention that he falls more often than his colleagues.

I wonder though if indeed he falls more often

    over the last three fences

than other riders? Likely to be completely unprovable, and a mere feeling.
