There will always be a few miserable old anoraks who don’t like Derek and judge him solely on the accuracy of his commentaries.
They don’t get it – the don’t get Derek and they don’t get the casual racing public.
Derek’s ideal for holiday venues during the holiday season – Great Yarmouth etc – as he brings that timeless Holiday Camp sense of fun to proceedings.
He’s very “Hi Di Hi!”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 4, 2022 at 08:06 #1621522I know what you mean ID. However, the crowd at a Thursday afternoon in November fixture at Sedgefield is different from the crowd at Great Yarmouth in the summer.
Did the crowd yesterday really need to be advised that a horse which was out of contention is owned by someone who was a minor celebrity about 25 years ago? OK, it was just a throwaway line but it was not really necessary.
He then spent much of the second race advising everyone about the trainers and how far each horse had travelled. I doubt the audience of long in the tooth punters at Sedgefield were particularly interested. They just want to hear how the horse they have backed is doing.
I agree that Derek is ideal for bringing the game to life for casual racegoers and families and the perfect master of ceremonies at an evening meeting. But I am not sure he is at his best in run of the mill meetings where most of the crowd will be betting shop punters.
November 4, 2022 at 08:36 #1621528Fair comment, even Derek needs to know his audience and adapt accordingly.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 4, 2022 at 10:27 #1621533How do people expect commentators on a 2m 5f handicap on soft ground with 6 runners to fill the time?
There is inevitably going to be a lot of fluffing and bluster to get through in a race that’s going to take about 8 minutes to run.
November 4, 2022 at 10:35 #1621534Peter O’Sullevan in his prime was never afraid of silence.
He could fill the time in a four-runner 3m novice chase: “Approaching the second of the 18 fences….and it’s Leader from Tracking Him On His Inside, a length ahead of Tucked In In Third, then Hold Up bringing up the rear…all over that one safely, though Hold Up got a bit close to it, but didn’t lose momentum….the next is the first of three open ditches…”
It’s not rocket science, just quiet dignified gravitas.

Thanks for posting that Nathan, gave me a right chuckle, watched it about 10 times I couldn’t stop laughing!
February 1, 2023 at 00:05 #1633184I thought Derek sounded in good voice commentating at Newcastle today. The long gap back to the third at the line in the 2pm seemed to throw him a little. A long pause and a scrambled ‘tight for third’ and the inevitable ‘ I’ll leave that to the judge’. This particular ‘head bobber’ was a distance of 2 and a half lengths.
February 1, 2023 at 05:31 #1633191It’s called artistic licence
February 17, 2023 at 17:26 #1635792Poor effort by Derek on the 5.15 at Southwell. He said there were four in a line fighting out the finish when two had pulled clear. He then seemed to either forget or get mixed up with the names and then called the inevitable PHOTO when it was obvious the favourite had won by a head.
He is a good presenter and race day host but I cannot understand how he stays on the commentator list.
March 1, 2023 at 22:20 #1637467Had a quick look at the bookies boards before wandering back to the paddock for today’s first at Musselburgh. Who walks across my path but ‘his nibs’! Seems to be getting a lot of gigs in Scotland at the moment. He clearly doesn’t use binoculars as he was lost when anything went out of camera shot.
March 3, 2023 at 18:16 #1637639Am I the only one wanting him to do the National …. by himself
March 3, 2023 at 18:33 #1637641HDLG has the best ideas – Chezza might actually unmute for THAT.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 8, 2023 at 16:54 #1642722Thommo’s been on commentary duty at Musselburgh today. He’s been truly terrible.
April 8, 2023 at 17:20 #1642730I was just about to post the same thing, Glad.
Even by his own standards he has not been good today. His call on the big sprint was poor.
