October 31, 2008 at 13:32 #187226
Just had a phone call from Mark who told me he has now been barred from the Coral shop he had been using.
Seems they have been making a list of his winnings and although some days he has won under a fiver they have pulled the plug on his bets.
So its betfair from now on.

November 6, 2008 at 23:44 #188433Ive been watching this thread since it started and I just wish i had the balls and the bank to have started at the same time. Howver I would have probably brought bad luck
November 7, 2008 at 02:07 #188461OFO, may I respectively suggest there maybe specific reasons why this system works for Mark and as a paper excerise and may not work in practise for a ‘horseplayer’. I’ll try and explain this as I see it (which means **** all of course).
In my view, the success of this system is in large part based on the simple fact Mark (the Old Boy) has no interest/knowledge of racing. He is not what we would refer to as a ‘horseplayer’ and if we couple this with his clearly moderate temperament along with the fact he’s not short of a bob or two and is fully aware of and accepts the financial risks involved. We have a full picture of why this system has been successful for Mark.
In order to examine the importance of not being a ‘horseplayer’ and temperament I’ll try a give few examples:
1 – Your on the sixth race of the day you’ve got your grand (or whatever it is) in your hand. The 2.40 at Fontwell is next up. The favourite in the eight runner handicap has eased out from 6/4 to 2/1 while at the same time a Gary Moore’s 8/1 shot (ridden by Jamie) has shortened into 7/2 2nd favourite. Are you tempted to punt the Moore horse?
2 – The eighth race of the day is 28 runner bumper in Ireland (don’t ask why you know what their like) but it’s going off less than a minute before a nice 6 runner maiden at HQ with a solid 6/4 favourite from a big Newmarket yard. Are you tempted to give the Irish race a miss?
3 – A bloke you know who is a friend of Dean Mckeown and who has never put you wrong in the past tells you the favourite won’t win the fifth race. What do you do?
4 – Money Tree, Aceform & Me (on the Handicap System Thread ) have all tipped the favourite in the ninth race of the day. Are you really going to put down 2.5K?
Anyway, you see what I mean. As silly as these examples maybe none of this ‘Horseplayer business’ is a potential concern to Mark. He’s only concern is getting on at the right time with an un-named favourite with the right stake.
All of the above may be a complete load of old bollocks, I don’t know, and none of the above is an attempt to detract from either Mark’s success or Seagull’s posting the system on the forum. Also, I’m not suggesting you couldn’t do it but, I think there’s more to this system than meets the eye and that is the man himself.
Well done to Seagull btw for keeping us updated.

You have summed it all up perfectly. The title of one of Alan Potts books ‘Against The Grain’ would also fit what Mark does.
Mark told me ages ago and I posted it on here that in his view most punters get too involved with following certain jockeys, horses or trainers.
In actual practice the only real problems have been getting barred three times now this year and once last year from various betting shops and the other has been the actual dangers of carrying large sums of cash around.
Hes now on betfair and has started to understand how it operates better by the day.
Would he start to lay some horses for additional funds or start to back horses ‘in running’?
The answer would be a definate no! As he has had not one other single bet on anything apart from what he does day by day.
Would he care Pricewise, Thommo or Jason Weaver all think the next horse he is due to back will lose? Does he care if one horse is being backed and the likely favourite is drifting and again the answer is no!
No because he takes a detached view overall he thinks that by overall relying on the overall stats of winning favourites they will in the end oblige.
Just the same way really that bookmakers who bet the the percentages and not bet to a personal view will all survive although the running costs may become the downfall of many.
Overall he has the balls (and the funds) to keep investing large sums when the need arises.
Luck has played a part as it always will do and there have been many days where after 4 losers the first favourite to win has been odds on and ensured a loss on the day but there have been days where the odds on favs have lost and a 5/2 shot comes to his rescue!
Of course he could still lose it all in just one single day.
