She may have been talented, even gifted, but in spite of what some pundits in the media say, she WAS NOT a "genius".
Our reporters and commentators really should get a grip on themselves and stop resorting to hyperbole every time someone half-famous dies. They are diluting the meaning of the word "genius".
Newton, Beethoven, Einstein, Gauss – geniuses. Winehouse, Hendrix and the like? I don’t think so.

Come on Hendrix was up their with the Greatest Muscians ever as was Kurt Cobain who both died at the same age as Winehouse at 27.

Winehouse was not a great Musician, but she was a great singer like Aretha Franklin and people of her ilk.

Genius is said too much these days but Winehouse was talented no doubt.

What infuriates me is the inane and disrespectful way the media devalue the word, "hero". "Heroes of comedy", etc! I ask you? What next? New one, I saw today. But can’t remember it.

Another thing that riles me is the quite romantic/heroic-sounding term, "lone wolf" applied to the cowardly, narcissistic, wee fantastist, Breitvik, when a five-year old girl with a submachine gun in her hands could have shot those unarmed, defenceless, young people.

Though, actually, I mmust say I beleive genius can be applied to pop singers. Merele Haggard singing The Green Greeen Grass of Home is truly inspired, imo – as is the dancing of Uma Thurman with Travolta in Pulp Fiction. He just shuffles about on the spot. In the fifties and sixties, before corporatism blemished the whole country, just the names and themes of some pop songs were incredibly imaginitive, often hilarious.

Einstein once wisely remarked, "The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." – Albert Einstein."

Not that I’m attributing anything in the nature wisdom, to our press." That’ll be the day. Even a clock tells the correct time twice every twenty-four hours.

It’s sad when anyone passes before their time or what we think is before their time. I never liked the whole genre with Winehouse and the lot except for Duffy, who I totaly enjoy. Thats just me. I do take exception to saying Hendrix was not genius. Even my main man EC said he was. When you are so talented and cutting edge as Jimmy where you change the whole face of rock n roll, I think the word genius is applicable. Especially in the context of what his category is.
I did hear something disturbing about Winehouse and heard it when Cobain died too. That being that they were actually planning their deaths to be included in that 27 club. Thats pretty messed up but I can’t dismiss it. Death lemmings for immortality? I hope I have not upset any of her fans with this. As I said, it’s always a sad thing whatever the circumstances…. :(

    No she wasn’t a genius.

She was a top drawer jazz/pop vocalist with an outstanding team of musicians, writers & producers behind her.

My worry is that the way she got to being a star, genuine artists may not get that chance anymore. A fine debut album that sold next to nothing first time around but the label stuck with her & everyone got their reward.

You’ve got to sell well straight away or your out these days.
