A very interesting Q&A session with regular forum contributor Alan Potts.

Fascinating stuff from AP – one of the best ‘interviews’ I’ve read. And brave of PJ to feature it as anyone reading it will realise just how hard the game is for pro punters and pro tipsters

As ever, pure commonsense from AP. If you’ve been betting for five minutes or 50 years, you should give it a read.

Commonsense indeed. Prof Potts is always a good read but there’s little in this latest missive that he hasn’t churned out before. Still, no bad thing to make Generation 2016 aware of his methods

It’s most noteworthy I think that AP is still at it and keeping his head above water after all these years. Few ‘pros’ have lasted so long I’d warrant, particularly the ‘flash harrys’ who are of course the antithesis of AP; and therein lies the rub, perhaps nay probably

I still believe that crappy handicap steeplechases at the midweek gaffs are the only way to avoid drowning, though I’m the first to admit that 20 years punting said races was more than enough for me: retired knackered

Keep at it and at ’em Alan, good on yer

Bit about trainers surprised me, but other than that made perfect sense.

Got talking about “value” to a bearded stranger paddock-side at Wincanton. Told him I looked at the Timeform Racecard and backed whichever one of the top two rated that looked value. He explained why outsiders can be value (percentges etc) without sounding at all patronising/like a teacher. ;-) Made me read up about the “Mathematics of betting” and never looked back…

An old racing pal introduced me to the (clean shaven) professional gambler “Alan Potts” at Goodwood, a face I didn’t know. We don’t always agree, but it was/is always interesting talking to Alan at the races.

Then, many years later I was shown an old photo of AP in a West Berkshire Racing Club Quiz – and recognised the bearded fellow!

I now sit in the seat Alan used to in said Quiz, taking on the good bad and indiferent of the racing world, including the other “AP”.

I owe a lot to AP.

I like those who recognize their shortcomings and can laugh at themselves Ginger, nice one ;-)

Wish you’d been on the Smartsig forum around the turn of the millennium. There was a guy called PJ who posted as frequently as you and Stevecaution combined. An ardent believer in ‘inside information’ and equally ardent non-believer in ‘value’, the discourse between he, AP and others was the stuff of legend

Do you think you’ll still be at it in 20 years?

Think you were about the same age when going ‘pro’ as AP was when he bit the bullet

 Thought you’d like that comment Drone.

I see today they might have found a cure for Alzheimers, if that’s the case I may be “at it” in 20 years time. Depends on what happens to betting markets, Timeform, if maintaining my “edge”, if I haven’t gone broke etc… My pension is nothing! The game’s changed a lot in the last 20 years, what will it be like in 20 years? When I last saw AP at Salisbury did tell me I am of a similar age as he was when starting out as a pro. However, I am and probably will never be betting to the same stakes as Alan. Hopefully will be able to maintain enthusiasm too. Smartsig sounds fun.

Interesting read from Alan. Didn’t realize he was almost 69, but thats probably the new 49 if you look after yourself I reckon. Doesn’t take long to live a life in the racing game. The Craven becomes the Derby Trials becomes the Classics becomes the Summer Festivals becomes the Dewhurst and Cheltenham talk begins soon after…one year rolls into another.

Scary how fast it all passes.
