Why is he so ultra negative on Irish Racing. Every article is riddled with his usual snipes here there and everywhere.
Recent Article
"Willie Mullins trained 12 Punchestown winners for the second successive year but there is a suspicion the top Irish horses are backyard bullies. Mullins, for one, measures himself at Cheltenham and Irish winners in the principal Festival races have become rare."
I have been saying for ages that Irish National Hunt Horses at this current juncture are not vintage by any means but it comes in cycles but he has continues to keep making the point that Irish Horses cant win at the Festival. Well Mr Lee its much harder for Irish Horses to travel over and take on the "English" in their own patch. Why is it that "Irish" Horses that fail at the Festival are not good enough yet when the English runner comes over to Ireland they were beaten by the Ground/Distance/Type of Racing and the crown jewel of excuses Over the Top after a long season.
Big Zeb was a horse he maligned many times as a backyard bully but once he beats Master Minded he didn’t say boo . At least give the horse some credit and more to the point his trainer.
" But the ability of its home-trained jumps horses to compete at the highest level will be as much a cause for concern at Punchestown this week as falling crowds and betting revenue."
Falling Crowds Mr Lee at Punchestown was in the double figures 87 people? considering the travel chaos wasn’t that a re-assuring to the public aswell as a increase in Tote Turnover. I wonder does he realise a Country of 4 Million compared to a Country of 60 Million will have many difference in attendance. The Punchestown Attendance was a very solid 18,057 compared to the 14,000 at Sandown for the final day of the respective NH Calender’s. But again Mr Lee fails to report anything remotely encouraging other than to dampen the NH game. On the First Point….yes I agree that Irish trained Jump Horses aren’t Top Class but when in Champion Races the runners are almost 5:1 ratio in favour of the English we may struggle if one does not preform to High Standard.
"….means the Boylesports.com Champion Chase today is dominated by two British raiders, Twist Magic and Kalahari King."
Dominated?…but Mr Lee surely ForPady the plaster who has form exceeding the above both mentioned.
"Mullins Measure himself at the Festival"
TRAINER Wins Runs % TOTAL PRIZE
W P Mullins 148 585 25.3% £3,144,601
P F Nicholls 117 542 21.6% £3,040,971Mr Mullins most successful Trainer in these Island Mr. Lee….you continue to play down everything the man achieves. Without Hurricane Fly…Micky…Fiveforthree Mr Mullins did quite well at the Festival.
Maybe Mr Lee in future you could Highlight that attendances were the same as last year at Punchestown that is a good sign that the Industry is still moving on despite the recession. I am not blind and i can see the impact overproduction has had on Bloodstock especially but maybe a bit of positive change wouldn’t go astray.
I wonder will the same re-hash come out if Ballydoyle Win the 2000 Guineas on Saturday which would make it the Irish 5th in 7 years and Ballydoyle’s 6th in 12 years and underpin the English Flat Horses reliance on Foreign aid to bolster the Country’s Most Important Flat races throughout the summer?.
Who Knows but Mr Lee could not make it more clear that NH is US VS THEM and when them is are struggling I keep shoving it in their face
April 26, 2010 at 17:20 #292625I read him all the time and he certainly does not "snipe" continually at Irish racing. If you want to take a few negative comments that way then thats your choice, but AL (excellent journalist and a very welcome change from the crawlimg droning drivel we get from some) is never afraid to point out the downside of the game wherever it is
April 27, 2010 at 07:45 #292717I’d be with wallace on this one. I’m not a fan of AL and Brian O’Connor is only marginally more negative about racing in Ireland.
April 27, 2010 at 08:49 #292730i enjoy reading alan lee and find he has and inside line on jumping that leaves the racing post standing.
cant agree with him though on his enthusiasm for using the sandown paddock as the winners enclosure for the b365 gold cup winner on saturday,i thought it didnt work at all espacially if you hadnt payed top doller to go into the members. -
