Jockey just misjudged the winning post
Was going to win comfortably but he thought he’d passed the post and hadnt
Stopped riding and came second
Long long holiday for mark crehan incoming
July 17, 2021 at 20:17 #1551144Many courses have a half furlong marker nowadays.
But I never saw a jockey mistake one, fully 110 yards out, for the winning post.
Is that what happened here?

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 17, 2021 at 20:47 #1551146Yes, he clearly thought the half furlong marker was the winning post and has been given a 28 day ban.
July 17, 2021 at 20:51 #1551147What a berk.

July 17, 2021 at 20:54 #1551148Bet his arse fell out when he saw the other horse come past and the jockey still riding
July 17, 2021 at 21:03 #1551149At least he didn’t start celebrating like Roger Loughran on Central House. Small mercy I suppose.

July 17, 2021 at 21:06 #1551150Just thought of the Central House incident and watched it on YouTube, TTC.
Always worth watching because it is quite funny unless you backed him. The funniest thing is Loughran is still punching the air when it should have been obvious that the race was still on!
July 17, 2021 at 21:09 #1551151I did back him CAS, but I felt more bad for Loughrane after the race in all honesty. Dessie Hughes really backed the lad after the race, which apparently was typical of a good man.

July 17, 2021 at 21:31 #1551154Sorry TTC, I would have been furious if I had backed him.
Agree it was good of Dessie Hughes to stand by him. It was an honest mistake, just like Crehan has made a mistake tonight.
It may not be popular to say it but I wonder if 28 days is too harsh. At least he was trying to win but made a mistake. We all know there are non triers out there – but how many of those riders get punished?
Even if I had backed the horse, I think I would be satisfied if he only got half that penalty. To take the lad’s livelihood away for a month because of a mistake (albeit a highly visible and costly one) is arguably not a proportionate punishment to the offence.
July 17, 2021 at 21:39 #1551157It was a daft thing to do but 28 days is indeed harsh.
I have had winning bets snatched from me – Wilde Ruby at Fontwell Park and Amantiss at Devon & Exeter back in the day – but you learn to laugh it off and say: “that’s racing!” if you’ve got anything about you.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 18, 2021 at 00:42 #1551166Surely racing is the one sport where it is a crime to make a genuine mistake and lose a race.
But its not so bad to blatantly cheat to win a race and at worst you’ll get two days off and keep the race and prize money.
An example, take your pick they are legion.July 18, 2021 at 03:10 #1551170CAS – I was quite annoyed, until hearing about him coming back in the paddocks in tears through a load of abuse. Perspective then snapped back in to focus and I felt for the lad.

July 18, 2021 at 09:20 #1551179I’ve just watched it and there’s not much to say. It’s happened plenty of times before and it will happen again.
To the idiots claiming he cheated there are plenty of more subtle ways to get a horse beat. It was just a genuine mistake.
Meanwhile the presenter on SSR last night said that it was a particularly long final furlong at Doncaster
July 18, 2021 at 10:22 #1551186The final furlong at Donny always seemed quite long to me. Maybe it’s a 300yds furlong.
July 18, 2021 at 10:44 #1551189A ‘long furlong’ ffs, hahaha.

July 18, 2021 at 10:50 #1551193Mark Crehan needs a trip to SpecSavers.
Even at 40mph, how can you fail to distinguish between this: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5186845 and this: https://www.shutterstock.com/search/winning+post
That said, he is now suspended without pay for 28 days.
How long do we think the suspension without pay was for the racecourse judge who called the wrong result at Sandown Park?
Because as night follows day it’s “one rule for them and another rule for us” with the contemptible BHA.
As for all the “angry punters,” human error and acts of God cost punters sometimes – I’ve backed horses which were clear when unseating rider on the run in more than once – and if you can’t laugh it off and say: “that’s racing!” you’re in the wrong game.
