Has it been traditional for horses like Le Duc to run in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup???
February 15, 2008 at 15:39 #143543In what sense, Charlie?
February 15, 2008 at 15:42 #143544He has 4 legs, a front end and a back end.
I don’t know whether Charlie was having a pop at him like so many have but seriously, I’m sick of people moaning about Nicholls running his horses in these races.
I’m all for tradition but when I’m attending a race meeting I’d rather see old friends like Thisthatandtother, Le Passing, Le Duc & Armaturk close the show than some fat nag out of a field.
Why should Hunter/PTP trainers expect to automatically pick up prizes with average/poor charges? The good pointers will still come through (Teeton Mill, Kingscliff etc) so I don’t know what the problem is.
February 15, 2008 at 15:46 #143545I don’t bother looking at Amateur races like this and have no idea who qualifies to run and who doesn’t, but is this race meant for horses of his ability
Seems strange a 130 rated horse having 12 stone and a 120 78 rated horse carrying 5lb more

I’m not having a go a P Nichols so get off your soap box
February 15, 2008 at 15:48 #143548Fair enough Charlie, this is then directed at everyone else!
February 15, 2008 at 16:03 #143554Not sure what the problem is here. The Royal Artillery Gold Cup isn’t a Hunter Chase, it is basically a conditions race open to all horses that have an official rating of 130 or less – hence the appearance of the 130-rated Le Duc. Horses have to be owned on the day by past or present officers of the Royal Artillery – I say "the day" because the majority of these will be leased to General Melchett or whoever to satisfy the ownership criteria.
As far as a "rich tradition", Nicholls has won this in the past with Whitenzo, while back in 1995 it was won by ex-Gold Cup winner Cool Ground.
February 15, 2008 at 16:07 #143556Cheers HJ
Any idea why he carried less weight than those rated inferior to him???
February 15, 2008 at 16:12 #143559Because there are penalties for wins after August 1st 2006 and he hasn’t won a race since 2005.
AP
February 15, 2008 at 16:13 #143560There were penalties for horses that had won steeplechases since August ’06; Le Duc hadn’t won since Jan ’05.
A good bit of placing by the trainer, IMO !
