OK maybe this is not the smartest question for a new user, but I just don’t know the answer.

I’m looking at the horses in race 6 at Sandown tomorrow (thursday). For example. Regal Kiss is a 3yo. His official rating is 74, and the race is a handicap restricted to horses rated 75 or lower. The race conditions state that, as a 3yo, he receives 13 lbs from older horses.

My question is WHY? I thought the horse was rated a 74, why does he need to receive 13 lbs? Isn’t he supposed to be worth 74, regardless of how old he is? I mean, I know he will probably be better simply by having matured, but why regardless of his age, why does a 74 horse receive 13lbs from another 74 horse? Official ratings aren’t adjusted for age are they??

    Roli
Conditions for 6th race at Sandown:

    highest weight: 4yo+.10st; 3yo 9st 3lb Minimum weight 8-9, 3-y-o 7-12

    Penalties after May 7th, each race won 6lb Weight for age 3 from 4yo+ 13lb Qaraaba’s Handicap Mark 75 Entries 35 pay £ 20 Penalty value 1st £2,590.40 2nd £770.80 3rd £385.20 4th £192.40
The difference is the weight for age allowance (w.f.a.) for younger horses; 11lb in this case, but varies with; age; distance of race; and time of the year.

roli, the WFA scale recognises, that in general, as a horse gets older from 2 to 4yo (on the flat), it gets faster as it matures.

The handicapper tries to rate the horse’s level of ability irrespective of age, assuming that it will get gradually faster as it matures.

Hence why younger horses need to have a WFA allowance from older horses of the same ability, slowing down the older horses to hopefully give them the same chance.

    Hope this helps
