The champ has just laid down his credentials in typically smooth style despite being 7

Can anything beat the mighty stradivarius?

I certainly don’t think so personally

Judging by his leger run I’m not overly worried.

He just looks like another strong stayer without a turn of foot to me.

Ala dee ex bee and nayef road, the type of horse that stradivarius has specialised in beating his entire career.

He certainly looks a solid e/w bet though

If there’s rain about before Ascot I’d be interested in Princess Zoe if she takes up her engagement in this race. Rapidly progressive mare last season and won a Longchamp slog in the mud in the autumn, and by no means disgraced in the Prix Du Cadran.

Two runs this season, no impression over 1m 4f first time then would have been closer at Gowran Park over 1m 6f but for trouble in running. Gives the impression of one being wound up for something bigger.

Emperor of the sun looks a strong contender but trueshan I think could be the bet of the meeting if it handles the firm going.

Would trueshan even run on gd to firm?

RTV has reported that Coolmore has supplemented Serpentine.

I cannot remember the last time a Derby winner ran in the Gold Cup.

I did Nayef Road at the start of the season but he’s been disappointing so far

There is the Coolmore middle distance also-ran ‘dart’ I was looking out for. Adds a bit of flavour to a previously dull looking contest.

Fame and Glory would have won the Derby bar bumping into Sea the Stars.

Yeats would have had every chance too in 2004 in my opinion.

If Serpentine runs he will be the first Derby winner to take part in the Gold Cup since Blakeney in 1970.

And if he wins, he would be the first horse to win the Derby at Epsom and the Gold Cup at Ascot since Persimmon (owned by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII) in 1897!

I remember seeing Persimmon’s stuffed head in the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket. Racing was very different in his day. After he won the Gold Cup, his next (and final) start was in the Eclipse!

Capri ran in 2019 after winning the Irish Derby in 2017. On that note he’s running both Derby winners here from last year. Just goes to show how odd a flat campaign it was for the classic generation, especially early on.

Don’t know how much of a difference the showers will make, but every little will help Princess Zoe. She’s off the boil a bit, but signs of improvement last time, and the step up in trip has to be a positive. Definitely worth an EW go at 20’s

Wasn’t expecting Stradivarius to be odds against so have had some.
