Entries out today, and just the 61 to chew over……
https://sportinglife.com/racing/news/61-entries-for-topham/47792
No market formed yet, but once it is, it’s one of those races where I’ll no be shying in having a go.
First look at the entries though gives me this early shortlist.
A Toi Phil
Blazer
Bright New Dawn
Clarcam
Definite Ruby
Eastlake
Go Conquer
Katachenko
O O Seven
Seefood
Vintage Vinnie
editedThose are the ones which catch they eye at the moment, and the one I’d be inclined to have an early go on is Definite Ruby from the Gordon Elliot yard, and I’m hoping he’ll be a price. Really nice horse over fences, and I think she has a good few pounds in hand, to the effect that she could conceivably not get in. I hope Phil Smith gives her the “Elliot Treatment”. I reckon she would have won The Kim Muir had she went, and she’ll come here after a nice win over hurdles in January. Definite #1 at the moment, though whether or not I’ll play early will very much depend on the price.
A Toi Phil is a very progressive horse who I really like, though not convinced the’ll end up here. Should have enough weight, but I’m not concerned about that, as he looks good enough to carry it. Clarcam, also in The Giggs colours is the opposite, and may need a help from the handicapper, but he’s decent enough in his own right, and this is the race I’ve had in mind for him all season, as I think they’ve just been mucking about with him. Both high on the shortlist these 2, and I think Clarcam is the more likely to head here, so I’d make him my NB.
Another horse who has to be considered, and used to be part of the Gigginstown crew was Bright New Dawn. Been running over the minimum trip, and ran a screamer in The Grand Annual. This is more his trip though, and I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t continue that progression from Cheltenham.
Blazer might not be the one for an early go, as he’s the type of horse who’ll have plenty of options in the coming weeks, while it would be madness not to give another JP owned runner, last years winner, Eastlake a second look.
Early early days, and I’ll give it a proper once over in a weeks time, and there’ll be plenty of clues once the weights are framed, and also the market, but Definite Ruby for me at this initial entry stage.
Hard to split the Gigginstown pair, but Clarcam might just be the more likely runner, so he’d be high up on the shortlist along with Bright New Dawn.
March 23, 2017 at 16:34 #1293881I have a little bit E/W on Straidnahanna at 40-1 as I liked his attitude and way of going LTO and think he just ran a bit free and got a little tired-probably won’t be too harshly treated by the handicapper
and some E/W on Gold Present at 16-1 as he seems a scopey sort and NJH does well in this race.March 23, 2017 at 16:58 #1293886Straidnahanna is a decent shout Greengrass, and you couldn’t fail to be impressed by him at Catterick. My main selection was a Sue Smith runner last year, and I do like hers for this kind of prize. With no money down from myself, he is the type I could warm to in the next fortnight.
Good luck with Gold Present as well, but the NJH horse who really catches the eye for me is O O Seven.
March 23, 2017 at 17:03 #1293887Well, I can get 100’s Definite Ruby, but the fact she’s unlikely to get in, is obviously factored in to the price. She might be worth the risk though, as she’s entered up on Sunday.
I’ll be betting others for sure, but at that price, I’d be mad not to take a chance.
Definite Ruby ew 100-1
March 23, 2017 at 21:56 #1293902I was very impressed with Go Conquer at Cheltenham and he is the one I am most interested in at the moment. He is quite low st 14-1 and I think I will hold off though until at least the five day declarations. He is blue on oddschecker but I hope he does not go dramatically lower.
I think The Crafty Butcher has a chance as well, and i thought he would be favourite, but you can get 16-1
March 25, 2017 at 11:20 #1294051Disappointed not to see Fairy Rath try to make it third time lucky, so I’ll take a chance on O O Seven. Looks to have a tinge of class and his trainer knows how to win this race. Jumps well and distance will suit. Quite taken by him!
March 25, 2017 at 13:24 #1294092Was surprised not to see Fairy Rath either Peter. Good luck with 007, he’s definitely shortlist material here, but unfortunately for me it feels as if half the entries have made it on to that shortlist this year.
March 26, 2017 at 17:33 #1294230Agree with you Lemons on Go Conquer i like him to
March 28, 2017 at 00:37 #1294360Thomas Crapper would be very interesting considering he’s seemingly back in form and connections mentioned this as a big target after his latest win round Newbury.
March 28, 2017 at 01:07 #1294367Fair shout Charles. He’s a horse I’ve followed for a while now, and he does seem to be in as good form as I’ve seen him. If I can’t have the winner, I’d love to see him win. Good luck with him.
March 28, 2017 at 14:44 #1294404Although I would like to see him in the big one, I don’t think that he will make the cut, so I have bet Knock House at 25-1.
I do not think for a moment that he will ever be labelled a model of consistency but I do expect him to improve for the faster ground. I have bet him for the last 2 renewals of The Kim Muir, though he didn’t appear at Cheltenham this season. He was a bit of an unlucky fourth in that race last year. He was badly hampered, and his chance seemed gone after that, though he was eventually brought back into the race and he did well to get 4th.
I am hoping that he is a horse for next years grand National but for now I would be happy for a big performance from him over the shorter trip.
March 28, 2017 at 16:36 #1294421Witness In Court sometimes gets a good mention on here, but for info, still priced up with loads of firms, but he’s been scratched.
March 28, 2017 at 23:20 #1294461Agree with you Lemons on Go Conquer i like him to
I was going to wait until Friday Darren for the decs, but there was not a lot of 12-1 left, and I have bet him each way
March 29, 2017 at 22:03 #1294525Agree re-Clarcam VTC, an Elliott special if I ever saw one.
March 29, 2017 at 23:56 #1294532Yeah Corm, I’m really keen on him here, but definitely holding off until the 5 days decs.
March 31, 2017 at 00:18 #1294629HENRYVILLE is the one for me here!! Ran well behind As De Mee here before Christmas and then almost got loose before the race at Cheltenham but still ran well enough even though he only finished ninth behind Road To respect!! 16/1 will do for me and if he turns up I think he will go pretty close.
The other one I have had a saver on is VINTAGE VINNIE who has had experience of these fences now which should stand him in good stead and I think has been waiting for better ground and at 33/1 is worth a little saver ante post.
This race has been good to me the last couple of years so I am hoping it will again (Remember eastlake ?? LOL )
March 31, 2017 at 01:18 #1294634Vintage Vinnie is very high on my shortlist Raymo, and almost certain to be with him if he goes
