The reason for Defi Du Seuil switching to Ascot was given thus:-
Defi Du Seuil was the 5-1 market leader for the Greatwood Hurdle and had been reported on course for Cheltenham by Frank Berry, racing manager to McManus, on Monday.
However, the eagerly anticipated reappearance of Defi Du Seuil, who captured three Grade 1s during a brilliant juvenile season, including the Triumph Hurdle, has been put back six days.
Hobbs said on Tuesday: “In discussing the situation with connections, it has been decided that the hurdle at Ascot will be a more favourable first run of the season.
“For a relatively young horse like him, Ascot will be better than the hurly-burly of the Greatwood.”
Now, anyone can see that it does not make any sense.
It’s got nothing whatsoever to do with finding the horse lame the next morning nor is it something that cropped up at the last minute.
The Racing Manager says one thing on Monday and the trainer completely reverses it at short notice.
They are bound to have considered it already and it’s not as if the Greatwood suddenly became a “Hurly Burly Race” overnight. There were 47 entries, it was hardly likely to be a quiet, 5 runner, affair. They would need to be naffing amateurs to take until after saying the horse was running, in order to suddenly realise that the race might not suit.
The Hobbs excuse is as flimsy as a Chinese Lantern and can be picked apart by anyone with the merest sense of logic. It breaks down to either the Racing Manager being an ill informed idiot, or trying to believe that Philip Hobbs didn’t start thinking about the race at all until Tuesday morning. Hardly people you could believe could be so naive, and yet still be in employment.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 16, 2017 at 12:33 #1326960It actually doesn’t matter how flimsy the excuse is. People change their minds all the time for a variety of reasons. There is nothing to suggest that they DELIBERATELY misled anyone. I’d be more concerned about Nicky Henderson’s rubbish in relation to altior
November 16, 2017 at 13:10 #1326964Maybe they had second thoughts, bringing back memories of the ill-fated Detroit City who was never the same horse after hacking up in this.
November 16, 2017 at 15:21 #1326980Henderson and Hobbs showed disregard for punters. I wrote about it here https://lazybet.com/2017/11/15/racing-needs-to-take-more-care-of-punters/
November 16, 2017 at 16:00 #1326982Good read, well put together.
I do feel for connections of Cloudy Dream and very different to the other two instances mentioned in the piece. just a genuine human error, was good to see a few bookmakers refunding on it.
November 16, 2017 at 16:48 #1326988Do you think Defi’s connections thought his presence in the 5 day decs for the Greatwood would scare more opponents off? Then realised after the final decs that that hadn’t happened (because handicaps inherently more resistant to cutting up in the face of big fish) and that he would have stiffer opposition than they realised and so gave it the swerve?

The point is that Detroit City happened many moons ago. Why enter the horse at all if such an obvious worry was at the back of your mind?
It’s akin to Peter Hobbs having amnesia for many years and then suddenly being cured a few hours after they stated the horse would run.
I like Fairy Stories myself but I am not accepting this welly.
It seems odd that Paul Nicholls seemed to be tilting at an impossible windmill with Politologue in the Tingle Creek and then shortly afterwards we find out that Altior isn’t running in it.
We punters are like cheated on partners, who are last to find out about it.
Lady Godiva is probably the only person who ever approached a horse with honest intentions.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Harsh on nicholls
November 16, 2017 at 20:08 #1327011Politologue ain’t no Rocinante!

Nicely written piece there Joe. Unlike some here, proper thought has gone into considering both sides of the argument and the relevance of the timing, which is crucial, rather than just being a catch-all/tough **** logic.

November 16, 2017 at 23:09 #1327030london prize at 20/1 e/w, thrown in off his current flat mark (how many get in)?
Ill take a small piece of the 12/1 for divin bere, think this horse will prove to be something decent (cost me a few quid at cheltenham!)
A live race though, a case can be made for a good few, campeador another who would interest me at 16/1 but ill stick with the two for now
Surprised im getting the run with london prize at the odds! He did the business for me last week in the elite and he was chucked in at the weights
Even with the penalty from last weeks win he should still have a little in hand, not as sure he will win as i was when i posted the above as he hadnt won the elite at that point, but at 20/1 e/w hopefully he has recovered enough!
Hopefully they dont switcharoo like they did with dds and send him to newbury next month!
November 17, 2017 at 00:47 #1327036Just saying it’s strange that Nicholls would want to take on Altior. It looked a hopeless task really.
I think we are a bit naive if we don’t suspect that Chinese Whispers, which we are not privy to, are going on.
As for Racing Jockeys and Trainers, I don’t follow racing for any of them. It’s only the horses I am interested in.
I am always surprised to see some people lionising the human element of Racing. I find many of them to be unlikable characters and Nicholls is no plaster saint for sure.
The human side of Racing tells you nothing of worth in general and in the worst case scenario they speak with forked tongue. You would need a crow bar to get a genuinely informative comment from them.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 17, 2017 at 11:04 #1327056Just peeling the blisters off my burnt fingers from Defi Du Seuil. Didn’t foresee myself going in again as the only other horse I fancied, Elgin, was a doubtful runner. He lines up though so I’ve gone in.
November 17, 2017 at 16:37 #1327136Have added flying tiger to go alobgsise my london prize bet
16/1 is too big, a weight swing from lto and a run under his belt theres no reason he wont come on for it
London prize 20/1 e/w
Flying tiger 16/1 e/wNovember 17, 2017 at 19:47 #1327163Henderson and Hobbs showed disregard for punters. I wrote about it here https://lazybet.com/2017/11/15/racing-needs-to-take-more-care-of-punters/
Good stuff.
I think we can add Altior to that list
November 17, 2017 at 20:16 #1327171Is it me or did he look pissed today? I remember him coming out of a cubicle in the toilets at the Festival ( Jodami’s year ) and he could hardly stand up.
November 18, 2017 at 13:38 #1327384PP have given me a free bet so put it on Old Guard at 20s in hopes that Bryony Frost can continue her good run and her claim will be useful in the ground.
