If they set out on Mel Rendezvous to try to make it a proper test (rather than what they did last time), he could spring a surprise. He’s the only one likely to relish this ground.
For a course which drains the heavy rain remarkably well, Cheltenham seems unusual in that a day’s ‘normal’ rain seems to affect it, in the short term at least, much more than the same rainfall would on many other tracks. Strange. Going will probably be good again by Monday.
December 10, 2016 at 15:08 #1276555fantastic run by the new one , 7/2 the icing on the cake
December 10, 2016 at 15:12 #1276558Logic said that mtoy or old guard couldn’t win. Disappointed with skelton, ran mister miyagi 5/6 wide all the way around and ultimately that left him too far back when Johnson kicked on.
December 10, 2016 at 15:13 #1276560TNO would have a real chance in a World Hurdle – just took some 33s on the chance that Dicky talks Nigel into it
Edit 50s on Betfair to small money also taken

Just taken some 33/1 for the Champion, Joe.
Value Is EverythingDecember 10, 2016 at 15:27 #1276563Don’t get carried away lads. He certainly has no hope in the champion hurdle. Probably slightly better chance in the world
December 10, 2016 at 15:32 #1276565He’s just not quick enough, Mark: we’ve seen that time and again and the trainer has just said that he’s not so fast at home anymore, but in your favour is the trainer’s obsession that he would have won it 3 years ago and he’s a stubborn sod. He’d need that kind of ground and a poorish turnout to have a chance, I think, whereas on ‘normal, festival ground he’d relish 3 miles.
The horse has wanted a trip since his novice days and it says an awful lot for him that he’s done so well at the minimum trip.
Johnson hinted in his post-race comments I think that he believes the horse has bags of stamina. Hopefully a few wise words from him will steer the Twister the right way!

I agree with all of that, Joe. TNO is not fast enough the way he’s been ridden in Champion Hurdles before. But this thing about horses not having the speed for a Champion all depends how they’re ridden. Today was a different style of performance than we’ve seen from TNO before; jumped far better infront/for Johnson. If the jockey goes a strong even gallop in front then I think he will have enough speed (even on good-soft ground). Trouble is, are Twister’s usual jockeys capable of a Johnson ride?
Value Is EverythingDecember 10, 2016 at 15:56 #1276569If going for the Stayers Hurdle TNO will need to be held up behind horses to settle, far from certain to get the trip and – probably more importantly – won’t jump as well.
Value Is EverythingDecember 10, 2016 at 15:59 #1276570Fair points, though you need to be such a slick hurdler to win a CH from the front – something like Make A Stand and he’s miles away from that in technique.
Interesting to hear that his physical troubles are still there, with STD just mentioning ‘he’s had his joints injected and everything’
Anyway, unless Faugheen or Annie bounce back in sublime form or maybe Altior makes a sudden return, it looks like Twister will stick with his TNO Champion Hurdle OCD affliction. Good luck
December 10, 2016 at 16:02 #1276571…Just heard TNO also had a change of bit, which helped him remain straight. Had lugged right-handed last year and that could’ve made him look slow too.
Value Is EverythingDecember 10, 2016 at 16:08 #1276574They should really just go straight to the Champion Hurdle with The New One. He’ll only be 9 and that’s the best chance he’s got of winning – going there without another run.

He’d have a much better chance of winning a World Hurdle from the front than a CH imo. No problem staying that trip. Those 20f fast-run races where he’s looked at the end of his tether are neither fish nor fowl to him and I’m convinced he’s a stayer and have been since his novice days.
December 10, 2016 at 16:33 #1276585He’s just beaten the Champion Hurdle 2nd over 2 miles but he’s a stayer *facepalm*

Excellent record fresh, so I’d agree with you Zark’. NTD is talking about either the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton or Haydock in middle of January. Hope if they go Kempton they won’t run again before March.

MYOY didn’t run to form, Zark’. But then again NTO did give him plenty of weight.
