I must say that Whispering Gallery looks rather tasty. Hasn’t done much wrong so far, and even went to the trouble of not running as a 2yo, so there’s not many miles on the clock.
Could be a possible for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate as well as the Melbourne Cup. Front runner, so would be most suited by the Cox Plate???
February 24, 2010 at 22:05 #278923Buck House have ruled out Her Majesty visiting Australia this year.
You’re getting Prince William at some stage though.
February 24, 2010 at 23:04 #278935Yet another Aga Khan bred horse:-
Moore’s call for longer trials is about right
Alan Aitken
John Moore plans to propose more regular staging of longer distance barrier trials after his Hong Kong Derby plans for stayer Carthage were knocked over last Friday.
Carthage
, for whom Moore is looking longer term at the Melbourne Cup, was totally outpaced in a very fast-run trial on the all-weather won by young speedster Multiglory.
Both the manner of the trial, with Multiglory hitting the ground fast and keeping up the tempo, as well as the sloppy going conspired to get Carthage off the bit almost immediately at the rear and he was ultimately failed by the stewards for his effort.
That means he must trial again instead of being able to start this weekend over 1,800m – a far more suitable starting point than a fast 1,200m trial for a true stayer – and the Derby first-up looks his only option.
Stewards would point out that there was a longer trial available – the 1,700m trial won by stablemate Collection at Happy Valley on Saturday – while Moore’s counter is that he didn’t want Carthage having to go to Happy Valley for his first public outing.
Whatever the arguments of this particular instance, there must be a case for more frequent trials over 1,600m or 1,700m at this time of year in particular when trainers are trying to ready stayers for longer trips and Derbys.
Moore suggested once a week.
Well, they might be hard to fill at that frequency but is a mile trial once a month at Sha Tin, as things stand, too far the other end of the scale?
Carthage ran in Sea The Stars’ Arc, under the name Beheshtam.
February 24, 2010 at 23:57 #278946On the barrier trial subject, I’d love to see them introduced to British Racing with a few tweaks. It won’t happen though….
February 25, 2010 at 18:40 #279099Whispering Gallery and Age Of Reason both up front, which sort of makes sense if you think yours will stay, and others won’t. Jury out on whether WG stays 2m?
Race won by Sabotage, who has a similar profile to WG, as he was unraced as a 2yo, and ran for Mark Johnston as a 3yo.
Would say the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage, but it ain’t owned by Coolmore.

He will decide on Tuesday whether Changingoftheguard and Growl also run
.
He said Changingoftheguard needed to impress in a gallop to convince him not to geld him and spell him for the spring
February 27, 2010 at 19:33 #279531Was finally added to the market yesterday.
Currently £5 available at 210.
Mine is the £6 waiting at 500
Was slightly wondering whether we were slightly out of order adding this horse, so I checked Vintage Crop. He ran in the Champion Hurdle the same year he won the Melbourne Cup, so we’re not being total idiots.
February 28, 2010 at 09:39 #279609A bit remiss of me – have only just noticed this:-
“Maybe we will bring more horses next time in case one breaks down.” Saeed Bin Suroor, immediately after last year’s race.

Might as well waste some money on Dunguib too if you’re going to back Rite Of Passage to win a Melbourne Cup. ROP is much too dour to win a MC.
February 28, 2010 at 11:26 #279629A bit slow on the uptake – I’ve only just realised that Mourayan and Mourilyan are related. Gosh – the hurdler Mourad as well.
Don’t worry, I already know about Shamoline Warrior and Rebel Raider.
February 28, 2010 at 18:06 #279714Maybe slightly that way Chiswickian, but I’m backing the horse because of the trainer.
Also Rite Of Passage isn’t merely a hurdler; on a measurement of breeding class, he is the 4th best of the 40+ horses in the betfair market. (3rd dam is Dahlia.)
February 28, 2010 at 20:30 #279749I’ve only heard of half-a-dozen of these, so they’ll be a bit of work to do next weekend. Zavite is an intended runner. First job will be to find out how much My Scotsgrey went up for winning the Wellington Cup.

Saturday 6 March @ 3pmMarch 1, 2010 at 17:11 #279884I thought the entry conditions, order of ballot etc for this year’s race had already been settled, because there was a discussion a few months ago about whether the first 3 in the Caulfield Cup should automatically qualify for the field, after Vigor didn’t get in last year:-[/color:1yrkt9fh]
Victoria
Efficient fails Cup clauses* Adrian Dunn
* From:
* Monday, 1 March 2010RACING Victoria’s Greg Carpenter will prepare a report on whether Melbourne Cup winners should have automatic entry to the race.
The VRC is exploring what Carpenter likened to the "Arnold Palmer" clause, in which golfers who have won the US Masters or British Open have an exemption from qualifying for that event.
What precipitated the club’s report is the status of 2007 Cup winner Efficient who, under the qualifying clauses, would not be exempt from this year’s Cup ballot.
Such a scenario exists even though Efficient is a last-start winner of the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes in October.
The Turnbull does not carry Cup significance as it is over 2000m, and Efficient does not meet any of the three clauses.
The six-year-old has not won or been placed in a Group race over 2300m or more since August 1, 2008; he has not won a Listed race over 2300m or more since August 1, 2008; and hasn’t won a race worth $60,000 or more to the winner over 2300m or more since August 1, 2008.
Efficient was vying for Cup favouritism last year when owner Lloyd Williams scratched him from the race on Derby Day morning.
Carpenter has analysed the merit of Cup winners and their post-Cup performances for his report.
Given Efficient’s rating – he was asked to carry topweight of 58kg in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups last spring – the situation would present a conundrum for Williams.
With Efficient scheduled to make only a cameo autumn appearance and not in the Sydney carnival, Williams would have just a few races, primarily the Herbert Power Stakes and Caulfield Cup, to ensure Efficient gains a start in this year’s Cup.
A Herbert Power win or placing and a top-eight finish in the Caulfield Cup would erase any entry concerns.
But Efficient would be burdened with at least 60kg in the Herbert Power, and although stablemate C’est La Guerre contested last year’s Caulfield Cup, the race has rarely been on Williams’ radar.
Regardless of whether the horse is owned by Williams or Joe Bloggs, a past Melbourne Cup winner would add to the aura of our great race.
I can’t say I’m too much in favour of this:- it is after all from 1 Aug 2008, so it is a 27 month period, rather than 15 months qualifying period.
Would people really want a 4yo Melbourne Cup winner automatically qualifying for the race when it is 9 and 10?
[/color:1yrkt9fh]March 1, 2010 at 17:20 #279885and hasn’t won a race worth $60,000 or more to the winner over 2300m or more since August 1, 2008.
I thought that this particular condition is that you win $60,000+ in prize money in a race over 2300 or more, etc?
ie, if you come 5th say but still pick up $60,000+ for that performance, it counts as passing the qualification barrier.
March 2, 2010 at 17:56 #280070The DRC Gold Cup has been commented on by the BHA h’cappers:-

SABOTAGE SUSPECTED
There was a surprise result in the week’s classiest contest for stayers, the £64,000 DRC Gold Cup at Meydan on Thursday, writes blog-editor Neil Young. Among the quartet of runners saddled by Saeed Bin Suroor, the most fancied were Whispering Gallery and Age of Reason – the mounts of Ted Durcan and Frankie Dettori respectively, and both already successful at this year’s Dubai Carnival. But stablemate Sabotage – a 20/1 shot with the British bookies – chucked the proverbial spanner in the works, arriving late on the scene to score by half a length from Age of Reason with the luckless-in-running Pompeyano 1 3/4 lengths back in third and front-runner Whispering Gallery another 1/4 length away in fourth.
Though the steady pace meant this wasn’t an ideal stamina test, Sabotage – ridden here by fast-rising French starlet Mickael Barzalona – has clearly posted a career-best effort on his second outing for Bin Suroor. He managed only one win from eight starts with Mark Johnston, scoring over a fraction less than 1m4f at Leicester in June before being upped to 2m for the Group 3 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot.
He could finish only ninth behind stablemate Holberg that day and later in the season notched a second and three thirds in handicap company, ending 2009 with an official rating of 100 after finishing a close third behind Munsef in the Chester Handicap (Listed) in August.
We aren’t publishing official ratings for Dubai-campaigned horses until they return to these shores, but on this evidence Sabotage looks worth a BHA rating of at least a 110 – I had Age of Reason on 109 following his handicap win earlier in the month – and there may well be more to come.
Foaled and bred in the UAE, this son of Halling will presumably be aimed at group races in Europe sooner rather than later – along with the likes of St Leger one-two Mastery and Kite Wood, plus the aforementioned Holberg, he looks yet another potential Godolphin staying notable for 2010.
It would be quite nice to have a little Maktoum family tree. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum is the son of Sheikh Mohammed, and isn’t to be confused with Sheikh Hamdan, as I nearly just did? How many sons do each of the brothers have that own horses?March 4, 2010 at 17:15 #280415Have just come across the Sportingbet Australia market for 2010 for the first time. Thought I’d record it here for reference, as it is a bit different from the betfair market. (I’m responsible for quite a few of the horses added to the latter.)
