I’ve just had a look at Alandi’s race record. The shortest distance he has EVER run over is 12 furlongs.
Been in the Aha Khan’s stable forever – damline goes back to Mumtaz Mahal.
May 12, 2010 at 11:57 #295392If Nanton runs a big race in the Yorkshire Cup, you’d have to think a tilt at the Melbourne Cup would be on the cards!
May 12, 2010 at 13:32 #295400The other main Melbourne Cup possible in the race is Kite Wood. However, I’ve tried not to say too much about any of the Godolphin horses, because they’ve got so many and it is likely only two or three will travel, one of which will presumably be Crime Scene. Also, judging from the record of other Godolphin horses, and Crisford’s disappointemnt with the weight allocated to Kirklees last year, I gain the impression that they’re more likely to send a Listed/Group 3 type, rather than a Group 1/2 type such as Kite Wood.

Altogether now folks …….
"It’s a long time ’til November …… "
Lots take aim every year and only a few ever miss out in the ballot. Perhaps Andy can give us some numbers in that regard?
May 12, 2010 at 21:25 #295462Well last year there were 28 final acceptors – Hissing Sid, Six O’Clock News, Hoorang and Vigor missed out.
Not sure about other years.
Gerald – do you think Purple Moon could come down again? I know he is older now, but I reckon the VRC would love that notion of history meeting the present. That is why they are attempting to get Pop Rock out of retirement.
If they had Pop Rock, Efficient, Purple Moon, Zipping, Bauer (or has he been retired? I haven’t heard), Shocking, Crime Scene and Mouriyan alongside horses like Linton, Shoot Out, Monaco Consul, So You Think, Zarzuela…I think they’d be very proud.
May 12, 2010 at 23:23 #295479Don’t know Andy. I’m not an expert or insider. I just like watching the sprinters and steeplechasers.
Purple Moon’s aim is the Ascot Gold Cup. Haven’t read anything about afterwards. Manighar is publicy stated as being Cumani’s main Melbourne Cup hope, though there could easily be another 1 or 2.
Manighar was bought with a view to running in the Melbourne Cup and with that in mind, his campaign here over the summer and into the autumn has to be carefully thought out. He’s really thrived since he’s been here and we hope to give him his first run in the Tapster Stakes over a mile and a half at Goodwood on June 4th.
Regarding Pop Rock, didn’t the trainer spontaneously mention it, rather than being persuaded to try again?

LOL. What odds do you want about 4 of that lot making the starting gates Andy? Be bold mate you’ve named 13 possibles.

And for the double I’ll take Shamoline Warrior against any one of those you’d like to nominate. He’s 100%, over his allergies and ready to go back into work soon. SW is a Gr1 winner waiting to happen.
May 13, 2010 at 12:42 #295529Yeah, I reckon only 3 or 4 will make the starting gates. Just trying to highlight the link.
And I’ll take you on with Zarzuela if you want. I like Shamoline Warrior, just not sure about 2 miles. Zarzuela will get it.
May 14, 2010 at 14:09 #295685My guideline for Nanton regarding the Melbourne Cup is that he has to work his passage, and so far he’s earnt £21.5k for the Jockey Club Stakes. Haven’t checked for today.
He was hanging in and faltered, so I’m presuming that he finished a bit sore on the ground.
Tonight it is Stanstill’s chance to pass the 2300m+ etc hurdle, though a Listed H’cap is rather an obscure way of doing it.
I’m also looking forward to seeing Sabotage run at Newbury on Saturday. I’d have thought that being a gelding would make it more likely that he would go for the Melbourne Cup . . .
It has actually been quite a fun edition of Channel 4 racing this afternoon. Cecil gave one of his trademark interviews, we saw him running, and we saw his latest filly – quite the ladies’ man.
May 17, 2010 at 05:26 #296031Mike De Kock and Kevin Shea think Lizard’s Desire could be a Melbourne Cup horse surprisingly.
May 17, 2010 at 14:27 #296062Don’t see what is surprising about that. Last year was my first Melbourne Cup, and I was surprised that de Kock didn’t turn up with either Macarthur or King of Rome, though it turned out that both were out of form during their comebacks. He has runners eveywhere else in the world, after all.
May 17, 2010 at 23:24 #296120He’s exempt from the ballot in the Cox Plate (2040m) so I thought that would be more likely.
But maybe, if De Kock thinks he’ll back up in 10 days, he’ll run in both. However, he knows Musir, all going well, will be in the Cox Plate. He won’t be training, but he may think that he is too hard to beat. He did say he was classier than Asiatic Boy.
I think De Kock will be desperate to turn the tables – he has had one horse run in the Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup, and that was Greys Inn in 2005. And nothing went right.
May 21, 2010 at 14:01 #296387Just received my credit card statement today. Apparently I’ve paid £50 into a tabcorp account. I tried to open an account a few weeks ago, but my old computer crashed during the process. Tried again, and the same thing happened. Then tried contacting Tabcorp to find out whether I had deposited £0, £50 or £100. However, as the PC had crashed when registering, I didn’t know what my account number was, or whether I had one . . .
I noticed in an email a few days ago that I had an account number, so the next stage is to print off a validation document, fill it in, and post it to Australia. Bought a printer a couple of weeks ago, but I haven’t bothered connecting it up yet. Bought the ink first, on the Saturday – £34.30. Then bought the printer on the Monday for £49.99. Found out when I opened the box that there was ink with it. Had also ordered a 3 pack of ink from Amazon for £12. Makes the ink bought from Currys seem a bit expensive.
Only really want a Tabcorp Account so that I can watch the racing on the internet via Sky Racing Australia, but I suppose I can use it to bet on exotics that aren’t available via betfair.May 22, 2010 at 04:58 #296447Just had £2 EW on Warringah in the next race at Rosehill, just to check that my Tabcorp account works!
Apparently, I’ve got 90 days to validate my account, which I think is down to 55 days at the moment.
Now to see whether I can watch races "live" on Sky Racing Australia . . . .
edit. Can’t watch races, because I’m in UK. That was a stupid selection. I had better leave this account alone, or there will soon be no money in it.

TACTIC …… hmm there’s an interesting one. I wonder if John Dunlop fancies a trip Downunder? Sheik Hamdan certainly no stranger to the Flemington winners enclosure on Cup day.
May 22, 2010 at 15:35 #296491At Talaq did ok for him Chis
