The market is open, so I suppose its time to start a thread.
Further UK purchases for horses to be trained in Australia 31 Oct 2009
By Rob Burnet
Further UK horses have been purchased to race in Australia with news that the Irish Field St Leger and Prix du Cadran winner Alandi, along with stablemate Mourayan, fifth in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster, have been sold by their owner the Aga Khan to an undisclosed buyer with the primary aim of winning next year’s 150th running of the Melbourne Cup.Both horses are out of the Irish stables of John Oxx, well known this year for training the champion Cape Cross colt Sea The Stars who has just been retired to The Aga Khan’s Studs to stand at stud.
The horses will be based with a Melbourne-based trainer reported The Racing Post on Friday.
Well-known bloodstock agent in both hemispheres, Hubie de Burgh, who concluded the sale, was unable to advise the name of the new owner.
“I can confirm that Alandi and Mourayan have been sold to a highly successful racehorse owner in Australia and they will both be trained in Melbourne with the main aim to try and win the 2010 Melbourne Cup,” said de Burgh, reported The Racing Post.
Alandi, successful five times in eight starts, crowned a magnificent Arc day for Oxx and jockey Mick Kinane at Longchamp earlier this month when the son of Galileo secured a narrow victory over Kasbah Bliss in the Cadran.
These sales come on top of purchases last week at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale at Newmarket, England, of tried horses for the Waller, Williams and Freedman stables.
Victorian owner Lloyd Williams purchased the three-year-old Galileo colt Martial Law who was knocked down to expatriate Brit Geoffrey Faber for 230,000 guineas. Tattersalls reported that Faber, who was formally Luca Cumani’s assistant in Newmarket, spent time in Dubai working as a steward for the Emirates Racing Association before relocating to Melbourne in Australia. He had to withstand the efforts of agents Anthony Stroud and Alastair Donald to secure Martial Law, the two-time winner for Andre Fabre who was consigned to the sale from Voute Sales.
The Freedman stable, with the assistance of local agents Grant and Tom Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock, purchased the four-year-old gelding Fanjura for 210,000 guineas on behalf of the Ball & Chain Syndicate.
The son of Marju, who was rated 114 by ‘Timeform’ was consigned from Barry Hills’ Faringdon Place Stables and is the winner of four of his 13 starts and was secured by Pritchard-Gordon after he saw off trainer Howard Johnson.
Rosehill based Waller has been paving the way in recent times with groups of tried horses from this sale with good success in Sydney metropolitan races. Stable connections of have also purchased an interest Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup runner Warringah (GB), another by Galileo. Five horses were purchased this year from Tattersalls.
The David Hayes stable has also been active buying their Cup runner Changingoftheguard (IRE) from the stables of Coolmore’s Aidan O’Brien.
The 5 purchased by Chris Waller include

The other must have been pretty cheap, as I haven’t come across him yet.[/color:1launz0n]edit: eventually realised I should order the HIT sale by Buyer! 6 not 5, though the other 2 won’t be running in any Melbourne Cup though:-

Shamoline Warrior and Hebridean are both chucked for not having enough class.
There is a consequence to this, because it means that Shamoline Warrior’s half-sister Rebel Raider is also chucked for not having enough class. Now it seems unlikely that a low-class mare would produce two class horses in succession, so maybe there may be something wrong with the figures/methodology.

Hebridean??? Speed Gifted will, if fit, probably be aimed at an autumn campaign, so he ought to be handicapped out of it by next spring.
November 5, 2009 at 23:02 #257335There will be an announcement about the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup at about Noon their time, and 1am ours by the Federal Government and the Chairman of the VRC.
Speculating, the only thing I can think is either they will ban Mourilyan and any other horse in the same ownership, or maybe for that special occasion they will ban all overseas horses.
Anyway, can’t stay up for that as it is in the middle of my sleeptime.
edit: Just thought that they might make it an official National Holiday.
November 5, 2009 at 23:51 #257339Word on the grapevine is the announcement is with regards to prizemoney for the 150th race – a whopping AUD$10,000,000!
So you can understand why Alandi and Mourayan are getting their tans on as we speak.
November 6, 2009 at 04:29 #257357Prizemoney for the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup next year will increase to $6 million.
As well as the $500,000 jump in the purse to celebrate the milestone, the Cup itself will have a slight remodel, returning to the 1930 design won by Phar Lap.
The 18-carat gold three-handled Cup will be slightly larger than the model won by Shocking on Tuesday.
A major international and interstate tourism campaign will also be launched while the Victorian government said it was hoping Queen Elizabeth II, a keen racehorse owner, could attend to mark the occasion.
Is that it??? Apparently the raceday is jampacked already.
November 6, 2009 at 04:35 #257358I bet the saucy vixen is getting a horse prepared for the race already – maybe
Kingdom Of Fife

November 6, 2009 at 18:37 #257474I think I heard last week that the people in favour of holding another referendum about Australia becoming a republic are going to be allowed to go ahead. If that is so, then I’m fairly sure that Her Majesty would diplomatically refrain from visiting the country during that process.
November 6, 2009 at 18:48 #257477Doctor Fremantle and Above Average have joined Lee Freedman.
I think we’ll defer having a look at them until Sunday, when all the good racing is over.

Saturday, 7 November 2009:
New Zealand trainer Wayne Hillis has vowed to return with Sterling Prince for next year’s Melbourne Cup after the gelding’s runaway win in the Group Three Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington.
Hillis is hoping that the six-year-old can use the victory as a platform for the Cup in the same way as Makybe Diva who won the 2002 Queen Elizabeth before winning her first of three Melbourne Cups in 2003.
Sterling Prince was blooded for greater things this spring when third to Leica Ding in the Geelong Cup and fifth in the Lexus Quality leading up to today’s victory over 2500m which was his first beyond 1600 metres and his fifth in 28 starts.
"He might be better next year," Hillis said.
"I think having a run around here now he will come back stronger and know the course."
Sterling Prince was being aimed at this year’s Melbourne Cup but connections mistimed the declarations and he didn’t qualify.
Hillis said Sterling Prince shied at the winning post which cost him second place in the Geelong Cup while last start in the Lexus he wasn’t suited when left in front.
"He has always been wayward and slow at learning things and beaten himself a few times but he is finally getting it together now," Hillis said.
Hugh Bowman, who has ridden the stayer at his three Australian runs, said the Queen Elizabeth unfolded as he had hoped with him settling fourth while Alexander Of Hales, pressured by Stormhill, ensured a strong pace.
"He settled much better today with the trail," Bowman said.
"There was a bit of pace in the race and he drew (barrier) one and all these things make a difference."
Bowman waited until well into the straight to make his move on Sterling Prince and he scored by two lengths from Crossthestart with the Bart Cummings-trained Naval Escort 1-1/4 lengths away third.
Bowman said his confidence in Sterling Prince grew after Crime Scene, who finished sixth in the Geelong Cup, was able to run second to Shocking in the Melbourne Cup.
Sterling Prince is by the impeccably-bred stallion Colombia who, by Zabeel from Eight Carat, failed to make an impact on the track but is a full or half-brother to five Group One winners including Octagonal.
Hillis, who trains at Matamata, said he would consider backing up Sterling Prince in next Saturday’s Group Two Sandown Classic but he was more likely to be flown back to New Zealand on Sunday night.
He said he hoped the Queen Elizabeth win would encourage the Hong Kong Jockey Club to invite Sterling Prince to compete in next month’s Group One Hong Kong Vase (2400m).
"We have nominated him for it and it wouldn’t be a bad race to run him in," Hillis said.
Glen Boss was taken with the run on Naval Escort who made up a lot of ground after being last most of the way.
"He is a promising stayer in the making," Boss said.
Naval Escort
is one of them.
November 8, 2009 at 14:14 #257889This is next Saturday, and over 3200m.
However, have just found out that it isn’t just a horse race, but part of a whole week of events:-
http://www.nzcupandshow.co.nz/
Connections of the current favourite, who won yesterday, joked about worrying that the race won’t be long enough, so I’m wondering if it might be worth looking for something to oppose him with, especially as it was reported that he grounded out the victory.
I’ll try listening to NZ trackside radio, to see whether they have any discussion programmes, rather than just broadcasting the races. Not sure whether this is the correct address:-
November 8, 2009 at 20:20 #257949This apparently is the highlight of the week, rather than the gallopers’ NZ Cup on Saturday. Although I boycott French & Belgian trotting on principle, I am going to have a go at trying to find somewhere to watch this on the ‘net. (Maybe betfair?)
Apparently, the race centres around a rag-to-riches mare, Kiwi Ingenuity.
Edit: well, if they don’t have the race live here, a replay will be available:-
