Gone for West Side Bernie at a price
May 3, 2009 at 02:04 #225233Not having a bad undercard by my standards.
Informed Decision and Cowboy Cal (beaten a neck).
Hoping I hang on in the Derby.
GL all of you
May 3, 2009 at 02:37 #225235Anyone know the result yet?

Oh well, theres always next year…Sportlife said the winner done it pretty easily too.May 3, 2009 at 02:50 #2252386 and a half lengths. I’m gobsmacked.
It was almost an identical ride to the one of Street Sense a few years back, same rider, same trip.
Official top 4….
Mine That Bird
Pioneer of the Nile
Musket Man
Papa ClemBejerano gave Papa Clem an amazing ride to finish where he did. Dunkirk not even in the top 10, Fresian Fire finished 2nd from last.
Turning into the straight it looked like Garrat Gomez was sitting on a monster in Pioneer of the Nile. He’ll be back. One positive is we know he handles dirt well!
And whats worse? I’ve got family over tonight, turned the TV on and the youngest member went ‘Mine That Bird will win’. How do these people do it?
May 3, 2009 at 04:41 #225242Here’s the race for anyone that hasn’t seen it….

Shade’s of Grindstone’s epic run to the line. Surely this plan can only be attempted on a rag? Spectacular.
As a gelding (the only one in the 19 horse field), I hope someone juiced him before the chop? Is it the done thing?
May 3, 2009 at 12:54 #225271I started writing down the results from North American Graded races for 2yos from the RP website, and so far, I have done all the Canadian races (both of them) and July for USA!
I’ve just looked in my exercise book. Mine That Bird is the first horse in it!
I’ll try not to fall off the Kentucky Derby Trial next year. I’ll be having a proper Internet connection from tomorrow, so I’ll be able to start watching race videos properly.
May 3, 2009 at 13:13 #225275Given the way the race panned out Pioneerof The Nile looks likely to prove much the best horse of those that ran in the Derby.
May 3, 2009 at 13:14 #225278I know the dosage Index has a pretty good record in this race & I am wondering what the contenders are this year.
Actually, Dosage has had a poor record recently.
Yesterday’s race was another nail in the coffin for Dosage, as Mine That Bird had the worst dosage index of the contenders, with a figure over 5, indicating a sprinter.

Grindstone is the grandsire of Mine That Bird.
A pity that Kendal Cavalier didn’t analyse the race for us in his style – I’m sure he would have given Mine That Bird a mention.
May 3, 2009 at 13:57 #225287A truly amazing race – you won’t see horses coming from "tailed off" to 6 lengths clear in less than amile in any flat race over here.
Well done to our own Mark Johnston – a pressure call and I really enjoyed the NTRA video link. I just hope this call becomes the offical archive because, by comparison, Tom Durkin was way off the pace.
Nice to see a British commentator calling what is happening, not what he expected to happen.
May 3, 2009 at 14:09 #225290The whole thing was a bit of a let down. Too many horses went off too fast considering the conditions, and some haven’t had the trip before. Then we had a commentator who didn’t even know who was about to win the derby until a second before it crosses the line. I did enjoy watching the winning jockey though, and that’s what winning is all about.
Given that it’s American races, you’re always gonnae question whether or not the horse has been given a huge dose of performance enhancing medication.
Well done to the jockey though, he was the only good thing about the derby if i’m being honest.
May 3, 2009 at 14:54 #225296Steroids are banned at Churchill Downs, Graeme. There was a big feature in the build up to the race about it.
I find it somewhat conspicuous that I Want Revenge, trained by Mr Mullins who only recently was suspended for giving one of his horses P.I.D’s, had to be pulled out of the Derby at the 11th hour.

Agree, Was annoyed when RUK took the NBC feed for this race and Tom Durkin who is normally a top caller was not on the top of his game at all and only said the leader was in front when 20yrds from the line.
Still a good race to watch and what an atmosphere at Churchill Downs, they really do go for it when the race gets going.
May 3, 2009 at 20:13 #225369Is this the Year of the Underdog?
33/1 winner of the Irish National, 100/1 winner of the National, 50/1 winner of the K.Derby let alone a 45/1 winner of the Melbourne Cup a few months ago!

Quite so. Dosage is a nonsense, as any geneticist will tell you.
