Before yesterday’s race Nicholls reckoned his horse was handicapped to the hilt and couldn’t win. In the event it looked like the h’capper got it about right or even underestimated the horse as it was only collared near the finish.
The race wasn’t a great contest for the money and doubts about several of the runners proved to be well founded. That said, I’d expect Nozic to be raised again for the narrow defeat.
Trainers seem to argue that:-
1. Horses shouldn’t go up for being beaten.
2. Improvers go up too quickly in the weights, forcing trainers to run them, then don’t come down quickly enough once collared. Examples are the Pipe trained Lucifer Bleu and Nike Walker . The former looked a h’cap snap for its last run but was beaten.
Thoughts?
