I sometimes wonder if it might have been better if Frankel had been beaten in the St James’s Palace. At least the pressure to keep him unbeaten would have been off (I seem to recall John Oxx saying he was actually quite glad that Sea The Stars was beaten on debut).
Might Frankel have been campaigned more imaginatively afterwards? Set against that idea, Henry Cecil was clearly very unwell and I doubt he wanted to travel very far.
