Going with Frankel and not because he is English but because he did face and beat higher rated opponents and did it with a continued brilliance in multiple races that few (if any) horse before or after have been able to replicate, so I don’t think RW would have beaten Frankel over either 8 or 10F.
Whilst winning in different countries and doing it year in year out gains high marks for him, some of the form of RW’s wins were against horses with official ratings 120 and below. He beat Aidan O’Brien’s good but not great horse horse Luxembourg (officially rated 119) only a short head in the 2023 Hong Kong Cup.
Whilst one of his two recent defeats was against BC Classic winner Forever Young (a higher rated horse), his 2025 Dubai Turf defeat against 121 rated Soul Rush does not read well especially considering that the 3rd (William Haggas’s Maljoom rated 115) was less than 2L behind him and the 4th (Ghostwriter) rated 118 was just over 2L behind him too. Yes I appreciate he wasn’t given a great ride that day but neither was Frankel in the St James’s Palace and he was still able to win.
