All the best horses should be allowed to run in a race that is viewed as the best middle distance race in the world – the argument that there are not that many geldings that would have run in it over the years so why allow them to run in it anyway is daft.
The fact that you don’t get that many great geldings racing at that level is all the more reason to give them a chance to run in the race when they do pop up – if your champion 3 yr old colt/filly/mare or entire horse are not good enough to beat a gelding then you can’t call them a champion.
The likes of a Calandagan (rated the best in the world but could only run once in his own country), Goliath and back in the day Cirrus des Aigles all being able to run in an Arc would have done nothing but enhance the quality of the race that much more.
Lets also face it, with recent results it is not doing great with regards to making stallions from the race (fillies/mares have won 9 of the last 15 renewals) and while we are waiting to see what Ace Impact will do at stud, you would have to go back to 2009 winner Sea The Stars to find a colt that went on to make a great stallion.
