Private Eye’s first foray into political candidacy. The only other occasion (as far as I am aware) was when Auberon Waugh stood for the Dog Lovers Party against Jeremy Thorpe in North Devon in 1979. He obtained 79 votes. Someone playing him can be briefly glimpsed in the BBC’s adaptation of John Preston’s excellent book “A Very English Scandal”, starring Hugh Grant as the disgraced Thorpe (who lost the seat).
Interesting to note that our old friend, the road safety campaigner Bill Boaks, was a candidate in the same contest. He got 20 votes. And the turnout was 81%! There was no problem in getting people out to vote in those days, before a mixture of apathy and disillusionment set in.
